The Gorge is a story of the triumph of will and perseverance by four young girls of pre-history. Micaela is of the people, one of four young orphaned girls within the clan where all females are chattel. All four eagerly anticipate the annual winter migration and the opportunity to find a mate. But first, they must undergo a rite of passage. The Breeding is an ancient ceremony, vital to the continued existence of the clan. It is also the one time when young women have any semblance of worth. But The Breeding has unexpected and disastrous consequences, leaving the girls outcasts with few prospects and little chance of survival. Now they must stand together against a brutal environment, wild animals, a vicious tribe known as the Raiders, and their own society. No one expects them to succeed—except possibly for the enigmatic Others, who move quietly among the People, pursuing their own mysterious goals A deft exploration of the subjugation and exploitation of women in early civilizations, The Gorge recounts the adventures, trials, bravery, and sacrifice of four girls struggling to understand their place in a world that undervalues their skills, their dreams, and their abilities. Together, they will prove themselves the equals of any warriors, triumph over their enemies, and learn to defend themselves both morally and intellectually. With a little help from the Others, they might just change the world. The Gorge contains sexually explicit material.

Review
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.
About the Author
What many call careers, Joe Zeigler calls interests. Beginning as a firefighter in Williamsburg, Virginia, Zeigler left to earn a degree in fire protection from Oklahoma State University, picking up a BA in business along the way.
Taking a job as a fire protection engineer with Kemper Insurance somehow led to a ten-year stint as a professional motorcycle racer.
In 1981, Zeigler founded the Penguin Road Racing School and wrote How to Fly, a how-to manual for motorcycle racers. Intrigued by the developing world of personal computers, he retired from racing to become a consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation.
Zeigler launched six computer stores and the nation’s first computer discount warehouse—only to lose them at the hands of an arsonist. He rebounded to write FirePrograms, a software package for fire departments and the world’s first low-priced UPS shipping manifest software. He sold both businesses to focus on his writing.
Joe is also a pilot and a cook with his own line of hot sauce and feels ill-defined by any single idiosyncrasy.

A look into the past that possibly formed our future.
By Robert L. McClellan
My first introduction to ancient life and experiences was through a movie called
“Quest for Fire”. There were clans of people who had not developed language yet, but
communicated through gestures and groans. Not one word was spoken in the movie. Their fire went out and the search for a replacement was their top goal. Their quest was for fire. Along the way, they learned to make it.
"The Gorge" picks up perhaps thousands of years later with the ability to communicate, reason, and pursue goals. The development of trade, fabrication of tools and barter to extend their ability to survive. Yet still primitive in comparison to the world we live in today.
I have traveled throughout the South West and enjoyed visiting cliff dwellings that inhabitants used to survive. The inhabitants left a long time ago, never to return. "The Gorge" helped me to comprehend the complexity of their existence and perhaps reasons for their final departure.
This delightful book is an incite on what life could have been like centuries ago. Some societies
traveled from one location to another for climate change. Some remained at one place year round.
Each had their own customs and evolved as they learned to co-operate with other clans. I
found myself fearing the “Raiders” yet appreciating them after getting to know that several members
had kindness, compassion and did the right thing. Even sparing a life when ordered to take it. An enjoyable read for me.

A satisfying, easy, fast-moving read
By David L
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways. Their descriptive names include The People, The Traders, The Raiders and The Cliff Dwellers.
The author does a fine job of revealing the characters in the story, mostly by a series of human interactions and disasters they must overcome. They need to survive various challenges such as famine, flood, extreme weather, animal attacks, and attacks from other groups. He mixes in a satisfying array of descriptive facts about ancient times such as basket-weaving, flint arrowheads, bowstrings and rope made from hemp, and the making of Agave liquor, among many others.
Sex plays a vital role for these people, since their lives are short and they need to breed often to ensure their survival. The author's treatment of the subject is down to earth and entertaining but not pornographic. He describes the other exigencies of life, such as hunting and the gathering and preparation of food, encampment, travel, trading and defense in a colorful and informative way.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.
