Delivered on time, as described. More importantly: Although this lists Piano/Vocal, it also helpfully shows chord names above the staff, and has a 1st through 5th or 6th position fingering suggestion for each chord that is usually a nice voicing and often the voicing used by Amy Winehouse on guitar in her original demo tracks that are included on the Back to Black Deluxe record. You could give these charts to bass, gtr, piano, and vocals in any combination and be ready to play these songs.

By Anthony Buda
Nice book. But to accurately transcribe Amy's never-the-same vocal lines this would need to be at least three times as long (multiplying by average number of verses per song).

If you want the chords and some convenient lead sheets, say for an ensemble or band doing covers - this is great! If you're a vocalist wanting to learn Amy's performances, this can be a somewhat useful guide - but you'll need to use your ears and the recordings to really learn her recorded performances on Back to Black.

About the Author
Brian Marick learned Ruby in 2001 because Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, original authors of "Programming Ruby," wouldn't let him off a shuttle bus until he said he would. He's been programming in it ever since, and he's made a special effort to teach it to software testers. His previous book is "Everyday Scripting with Ruby," which began as a tutorial for those very testers. He's not a Ruby programmer by trade. He makes most of his money as a consultant in the Agile methodologies. (After getting off the shuttle bus, he was one of the authors of the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development.")

Awkward Treatment of a Challenging Subject
By Kevin Hutchison
I first encountered this work as the manager of a software quality assurance team. In that capacity, it failed to lend substance to other works that we used as references. Steve McConnell's general works, Software Project Survival Guide, Rapid Development gave far better structure to our overall software management. For test specific direction, we found other works such as the Craft of Software Testing much more appealing.

Updates the craft
By Mike Tarrani
In the past I had been leery of whitebox testing because it was outside of the capabilities of most test engineers. However, this book has caused me to rethink my position for a number of reasons. Foremost is the fact that a good deal of web and e-commerce software these days is in the form of mark-up languages and scripts. While these lend themselves to blackbox testing, added assurance can be provided by inspections and other whitebox methods.
This book prepares test professionals to expand their skills and knowledge to take on these tasks by providing a thorough education in logic, operators, syntax and expressions. He also thoroughly covers object-oriented testing, with excellent advice on how to deal with states, classes and inheritance in the development and execution of test plans and cases.
What impressed me the most, however, was the chapter on testing bug fixes and maintenance changes. Mr. Marick's treatment of this topic is the best from among the dozen or so books I have on software testing. He provides a checklist of questions that the test engineer needs to answer, which will provide the basis for a sound test strategy. While this chapter addresses whitebox testing, a lot of the material can be effectively used in blackbox testing as well. One of the gems that I got from this chapter is an awareness that test suites decay over time after software has been released into production. This is an eye-opener because many test groups add to their regression test case library as new patches and releases are promoted into production, but few validate these test cases on a periodic basis.
To the best of my knowledge there is no other book that solely addresses whitebox testing. There are certainly few books on testing, white- or blackbox, that cover as much territory or go as deep as this one. Mr. Marick has provided a valuable addition to the testing profession with this book, and provides a clear path for test engineers to update their skills to meet the challenges of effectively testing web and e-commerce systems.

An excellent book, should be a standard text
By Steve Shimeall
This is an excellent book, Marick has done an a thorough job of addressing some of the fundamental issues of white box testing, explaining techniques and approaches clearly and concisely. He addresses the common issues that trip up whitebox testing organizations as well as the more advanced topics.
The book can be read productively by developers and testers. May be a little too technical for managers.
In 20+ years of testing software, I have encountered few books that I would recommend. This book is one of the best, addressing areas and techniques that are omitted from other works. Highly recommended

Speaking in Tongues and Dancing Diaspora: Black Women Writing and Performing (Race and American Culture), by Mae G. Henderson

The oral tradition has always played an important role in African American literature, ranging from works such as Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God to Toni Morrison's Beloved. These and countless other novels affirm the power of sonance and sound in the African American literary canon. Considering the wide swath of work in this powerful lineage -- in addition to its shared heritage with performance -- Mae G. Henderson deploys her trope of "speaking in tongues" to theorize the preeminence of voice and narration in black women's literary performance through her reconstruction of a fundamentally spiritual practice as a critical concept for reading black women's writing dialogically and intertextually.

The first half of the book is devoted to influential works of fiction, as Henderson offers a series of spirited, attentive readings of works by Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Sherley Anne Williams, Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones, and Nella Larsen. The second half shifts gears to consider the world of female African American performance, most notably in the figures of Josephine Baker and the video dancer. Drawing on the trope of "dancing diaspora," Henderson proposes a model of theorizing based on "performing testimony" and "critical witnessing." Throughout the book, Henderson draws on a history of black women not only in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, but also within the traditions of classical, Christian, African, and black diasporic spirituality and performance. Ultimately, Speaking in Tongues and Dancing Diaspora provides a deeply felt reflection on race and gender and their effects within the discourses of speaker/listener and audience/performer.

Review

"Mae Henderson's always luminous, often foundational work is a gift to all who study women's writing and African American literature. Fusing beautiful theorizing with insightful close readings, Henderson illuminates Josephine Baker's performances and hip-hop videos as brilliantly as she does the fictions of Hurston, Morrison, and Walker." --Cheryl A. Wall, author of Worrying the Line: Black Women Writers, Lineage, and Literary Tradition

"Mae Henderson's brilliant collection of essays offers a multiplicity of gifts to the attentive reader: a gift of tongues, and along with them, an attentive ear that listens for the soul music of Black women's discourse; a gift of witnessing and interpreting both the voices and the silences; a gift of theorizing what Lacan called the 'vocative drive,' the demand, desire, and need to speak and to be heard; an infectious gift that, once received, will keep on giving insight into the literary tapestry it so masterfully unfolds." --W. J. T. Mitchell, author of Seeing Through Race

"With fluid clarity and fresh verve, Mae G. Henderson reflects on twentieth-century Black women's work as writers and performers. From the iconic dancing body of Josephine Baker's performances to the aesthetically re-membered body of Toni Morrison's fiction, Henderson theorizes the motion and the language constructing epistemologies of Black women's modern production. Her supple and dexterous attention to formal movements and expressive discourses enables a lively mapping of both known and underexplored regions of Black women's contributions to textual and visual art and to the constitution of contemporary feminist thinking." --Thadious M. Davis, author of Southscapes: Geographies of Race, Region, and Literature

"Speaking in Tongues and Dancing Diaspora underscores Mae Henderson's status as one of our most astute critical minds. Whether illuminating texts by Black women writers, theorizing the role of black feminist theorists, or exploring the multiple dimensions and contexts of Josephine Baker's performance, Henderson exhibits a 'knowing so deep' from which all of her readers will benefit. This project constitutes a major contribution to both literary and cultural studies, one that is sure to resonate for years to come." --Farah Jasmine Griffin, author of Harlem Nocturne: Women Artists and Progressive Politics During World War II

"Speaking in Tongues is an important volume as a deeper literary-historical view into
African-American women's writing; in doing so, it equally presents the evolution of
black feminist theory and criticism." -- Cultural Sociology

This was nice......there is a fifth one right?
By A Customer
Before I started reading this book I had the impression that It would sum up all of the incidents and all the drama leading up to it. But, I was greatly disappointed. When the book ended I was thinking, did the real ending of the book fall out? Then I turned to page and saw the epilogue, so I thought, "Okay this should sum things up for me." But, It didn't. All it did was to leave me hanging on a string, and wondering if I misread something about a fifth book. I suggest that you don't read it unless you have prepared yourself for dissatisfation. But really, Is a fifth book coming out? Cause if it is, I'll change my review around completely.

A Classic. Still the Gold Standard for Byzantine History.
By Peter Ramming
"Roman political concepts, Greek culture, and the Christian faith were the main elements which determined Byzantine development. Without all three the Byzantine way of life would have been inconceivable. It was the integration of Hellenistic culture and the Christian religion within the Roman imperial framework that gave rise to that historical phenomenon which we know as the Byzantine Empire." Thus begins the first paragraph of George Ostrogorsky's masterful narrative of Byzantine history. As this quotation demonstrates, Ostrogorsky's writing is a model of erudition, clarity, and efficiency. It would be hard to improve the quality of his prose, and he maintains this level of scholarship throughout the 500+ pages of main text. But the writing has a natural fluidity which carries the reader along rather effortlessly throughout the full span of East Roman/Byzantine history, from 284 A.D. (rise of Emperor Diocletian) to 1453 A.D. (fall of Constantinople to the Turks). Ostrogorsky gives this inherently rich and fascinating material the virtuoso treatment it deserves, and the reader is rewarded on every page by Ostrogorsky's efforts.
Of course, readers of this English translation from the original German of the 3rd edition (1963) of Ostrogorsky's "History of the Byzantine State" owe an immense debt to Professor Joan M. Hussey, whose rendering of the German into English is a masterpiece in its own right. Moreover, through the collaboration of Professors Ostrogorsky and Hussey, the truly extensive references and footnotes have been brought up to date from the 1940 German 1st ed. to the 1967 time-frame of Hussey's 2nd English edition presented here. Of course, in the intervening 40+ years a veritable explosion in the fields of Late Antique and Byzantine studies has taken place, but Ostrogorky's mastery of the original sources, and the German, French, Italian, English, and Slavic secondary literature will not soon be replicated.
"History of the Byzantine State" is a delight to read, and is divided into 8 main chapters. These chapters are respectively subdivided into numbered sections, and both chapters and sections are clearly titled, so that the breadth of Byzantine History is clear through a glance at the Table of Contents.
Other reviewers have complained that Ostrogorsky's writing is dry and lacks a "human touch." I found the opposite to be the case: "History of the Byzantine State" has a cogency and beauty of style, and is a model of articulate scholarship. And with such rich material as the myriad colorful historical human figures and locales which populate Byzantine history, it would be difficult to render this history in a boring fashion. Ostrogorsky's emphasis is the political narrative, but he does not ignore social and cultural aspects of Byzantium, and upon finishing his book the reader has a sense of a complete picture of Byzantine history and civilization. In the paperback version now standard the maps are incomplete, but this is easily remedied by consulting an historical atlas or the Internet.

Excellent Study of Byanantine Political Economy
By A reader
Ostrogorski's History of the Byzantine State does a great job describing the relationship between the state, the civil and military aristoracy and small holders.

He starts this theme during the early tenth century and carries it forward to the end of the book. It is a story of how the state becomes less and less able to defend itself against the aristocracy.

While other writers speak of Ostrogorski's lack of passion about Byzantium's last centuries, this is also an advantage because it allows him to focus on political and military causes of the Empire's decline after 1025.

A few years ago I read Vassliev's two volume book on Byzantium and enjoyed it very much. In particular, those looking for a lengthy discussions of culture would do better with Vassilev.

But it was only after reading Ostrogoski that I got a clear understanding of the political change after the death of Basil II (and the role of Psellus in them), the wars against Michael VIII after the recapture of Constantinople in 1261 and fourteenth century civil wars.

In addition, this is a very well written book. In particular, Ostrogoski does a great job of starting his paragraphs with short, pithy topic sentences. He is also very good at drawing broad comparisons across Byzantine history (Vassilev, by contrast, tends to get caught up in details).

In sum, while I am glad I read Vassilev first, Ostrogoski's book has given me a much stronger sense of the outlines of Byznatine history.

Where are all the maps?
By Suzanne Murphy
This book is a well presented overview of the political history of the Byzantine Empire. Therefore, it suffers from the same problems as most other political history books, it fails to take into account important non-political developments. For instance, the Plague of Justinian is not mentioned. One would thing that a sixty percent mortality rate in Constantinople would earn at least a passing glance. However, the author/publishers are not responsible for the woeful inadquecies of political history. The problem with the book lies in the bizarre lack of maps. (I have the Rutgers University Press, Fourth Paperback Printing, 1995.) There are only two maps (p. 289 and 521). They are both of the Balkans. There is not a single map of Anatolia in the entire book. Why would anyone publish a book in English for a western audience on the Byzantine Empire and not include a single map of Anatolia?

Fat White Vampire Blues, by Andrew Fox

Jules Duchon was a real New Orleans vampire. Born and bred in the working-class Ninth Ward, bitten and smitten with the Big Easy. Driving through the French Quarter, stuck in a row of bumper-to-bumper cars that crept along Decatur Street like a caravan of bone-weary camels, Jules Duchon barely fit behind the steering wheel of his very big Cadillac taxicab. Even with the seat pushed all the way back.

Damn, he was hungry.

Jules stopped his cab, pressed the wobbly rocker switch that jerked the electric windows reluctantly to life, and stuck his head into the humid night air. “Hey, baby. You interested in some dinner?”

–from Fat White Vampire Blues

Vampire, nosferatu, creature of the night–whatever you call him–Jules Duchon has lived (so to speak) in New Orleans far longer than there have been drunk coeds on Bourbon Street. Weighing in at a whopping four hundred and fifty pounds, swelled up on the sweet, rich blood of people who consume the fattiest diet in the world, Jules is thankful he can’t see his reflection in a mirror. When he turns into a bat, he can’t get his big ol’ butt off the ground.

What’s worse, after more than a century of being undead, he’s watched his neighborhood truly go to hell–and now, a new vampire is looking to drive him out altogether. See, Jules had always been an equal opportunity kind of vampire. And while he would admit that the blood of a black woman is sweeter than the blood of a white man, Jules never drank more than his fair share of either. Enter Malice X . Young, cocky, and black, Malice warns Jules that his days of feasting on sisters and brothers are over. He tells Jules he’d better confine himself to white victims–or else face the consequences. And then, just to prove he isn’t kidding, Malice burns Jules’s house to the ground.

With the help of Maureen, the morbidly obese, stripper-vampire who made him, and Doodlebug, an undead cross-dresser who (literally) flies in from the coast– Jules must find a way to contend with the hurdles that life throws at him . . . without getting a stake through the heart. It’s enough to give a man the blues.

From Publishers Weekly
Vampires have problems, too, as shown in Fox's clever, wisecracking debut that never quite works as the tragicomedy it aspires to be. Taxi-driving vampire Jules Duchon weighs 350 pounds and is still gaining from drinking the blood of the citizens of New Orleans, whose rich, unhealthy diets are teeming with fatty lipids. Obesity's not his only problem. A flashy new black vampire in town-Malice X, a Superfly with fangs-has taken over his turf. Jules turns to Maureen, the super-sized stripper who "made" him for help, and Mo eventually calls on Jules's ex-buddy Doodlebug ("D.B.") for more aid. D.B., a lithe transvestite vampire who has had great success in California as a self-reliance guru, wisely allows Jules to follow his own path-for a while. When it becomes apparent that Jules has a lot to learn about being a vampire, D.B. is there to guide him. While the author pays obvious homage to A Confederacy of Dunces, the humor here fails to rise above the sitcom level. Jules is just plain dumb and his miseries are usually self-inflicted. Characters are mostly caricatures. Relationships and plot complexities-Jules's moral dilemma concerning his victims, his comic-book hero secret identity as the Hooded Terror with D.B. as his sidekick, his plan to turn a band of white supremacists into vampires-don't satisfactorily entwine. Although by the end a lot of blood has been spilled and Jules has learned his lesson in unlife, there's little of real substance to sink your teeth into.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Poor Jules Duchon. It isn't easy being a vampire in New Orleans. Potential victims' blood is filled with fat from the rich local cuisine, and so Jules is a whopping 463 pounds. He would like to diet, but, really, his life isn't too bad--until he walks into his house and finds tough-talking black vampire Malice X waiting for him. Annoyed that Jules has been feeding off black victims, Malice tells him to stick to his own kind. Shaken, Jules turns to his stripper ex, Maureen, the vampire who made him. She is as overweight as Jules and can't bear to have him around because he reminds her of her own heft. So she sends him to the High Crewe of Vlad Tepes, but they have "modernized" and no longer need to crudely hunt for victims. Things just get worse for Jules. The police confiscate his car, and after he feeds off a black mugger, Malice X retaliates by burning down his house. Jules briefly flees town but comes back and, with the help of Maureen and Doodlebug, a cross-dressing vampire whom Jules sired, he stands up to Malice X--not without dire and tragic consequences. Jules is an often hapless hero, but a sympathetic one, and readers of vampire fiction will delight in this droll parody of the genre. Kristine Huntley

Lordy, folks, lighten UP!
By Ms. Standfast
I've just finished this book, and it's a rip. It's neither as clumsily written as some of the other reviews would lead you to think (in passages, it amounts to an *hommage* to its acknowledged forebear, CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, and sometimes rises to the same headlong style) nor the grave social screed other readers describe. (I often wonder when reading reviews: did we read the same book?)
Simply, it's one long misadventure, and like the larger-than-life Ignatius Reilly in DUNCES, Jules Duchon, obese vampire, is shoehorned out of a comfortable rut and confronted with one ghastly predicament after another. The stakes, you should pardon the expression, are life and death, and Fox manages to make the reader care what happens -- it's not just a comic diversion. But along the way, almost every cliche in vampire literature (and pulp thrillers generally) comes in for a spoof. If you transform into a mist, how exactly DO you cope with a stiff breeze? If you become a wolf, what are your feelings toward lady dogs? And if you're a vampire in overfed New Orleans, how the hell do you expect to end up looking like anyone but Paul Prudhomme? (Disappointed readers of the Yarbro Comte de Saint-Germain vampire series, which turned into a mass of repetitive and overwritten soft-pore corn, will especially appreciate the plus-size boff scenes. There are some things you should NOT pour in a vampire's hot tub!)After watching Anne Rice pull off one terrific novel and then grind out affectedly morbid, S&M-lite sequels on a lathe for years afterward, this was a long overdue guffaw.

What Fun!! A bumbling, insecure vampire with a conscience (or at least a semi-conscience) After Ann Rice vampire novels ad nausium I never wanted to hear the word "vampire" again.............but this is delightful, and funny, and imaginative! A wonderful tour through New Orleans neighborhoods, culture and food ("the neon sign across the street reflected in the layer of grease on her red beans") the tour guide being vampire Jules Duchon whom you can't help rooting for no matter how many victims he "fangs"........I can't wait to read "Bride of the Fat White Vampire" next, and hope there are more to come!...........Beryl Schindler

weird and wonderful undead doings
By jon sanborne
"Fat White Vampire Blues", the new novel by Andrew Fox, is probably
one of the strangest books you could read this year, as well as one of
the most enjoyable. It's mandatory viewing for any fan of the
vampire/horror genre in general, and a good dietary supplement for
those whose summer reading is seriously lacking in pulpy, off-beat fun.
The fat white vampire in question is one Jules Duchon, New Orleans
born, bred and undead. And his blues is this: too much good livin'.
Too many years of feeding off the fat-rich blood that the veins of the Big
Easy have to offer have taken their toll on poor Jules: he now weighs
in at a staggering 450 pounds, & is worried he's contracting vampire
diabetes. He's definitely not the man (thing? undead fiend?) he used
to be, but still, the scariest fate awaiting him is that of a low-fat
diet--until Malice X enters his (un)life. Malice is the street-smart,
upstart and decidedly buff black vampire that demands that Jules curb his
feeding habits to "whites only", or face the consequences. Those
consequences are what make up the bulk of our bulky anti-hero's
off-kilter journey of self-discovery and liberation--one that seems to
delight in shuckin' and jivin' the reader in all sorts of unlikely and
very rewarding directions.
Sure, this is Jules' story, but the real star of the show here is New Orleans
itself. Its' fading locales and details are lovingly evoked by Fox in all
their delicate, eccentric hot-house glory, and the rhythms of that town
define the novel's rhythms: it is at turns funky, obtuse, ornery and whimsical.
Jules can't bear to change his ways anymore than he can bear the thought of
leaving his home town--no matter what Malice X threatens. One of the bittersweet
notes this novel hits is not of Jules' battle with the new flashy hip-hop culture
Malice represents (as opposed to the old school French Quarter jazz Jules and Fox
obviously loves so much), but that of another, undefined vampiric source: the
strip-malling of America, the encroachment of redundancy, where local
names are replaced by brand names, and every place is the same, no
matter where you are. Through Jules' eyes, we see New Orleans slowly
falling victim to this self-replicating virus--its' individuality
wiped clean bit by bit, block by block. Jules is wiser than we are.
He knows a bled-dry victim when he sees one. We simply line up to become one.
Old Jules also represents a big, flaming loogie in the face of the whole Anne Rice aristocratic undead pantheon---Fox is practically shouting, "Hey, lady! Take a look at what a real New Orleans bloodsucker looks like!" Ms. Rice even appears as a background character of sorts, in the form of local horror writer Agatha Longrain (yuk-yuk!), whose unholy offspring are the
pasty-faced, Goth-dressing vampiric wanna-be's clogging up Decatur
Street, blocking the way between Jules and his next calorie-rich,
home-grown meal.
Another strand of New Orleans DNA deeply entwined in the proceedings here is that of native son John Kennedy Toole's great cult-novel, "A Confederacy of Dunces." Jules and Ignatius J. Reilly share many qualities: they are both
obese mammas-boys out to find their way in the world, prone to endearing
delusions of grandeur as well as epic bouts of self-loathing. They
both represent in their own overwrought ways the twins of inspiration and
sloth that live in all of us--and so we cheer them on even they disgust
us, as we laugh at their fantastically elaborate foibles. Because they
are us, fully dressed in all our glory and (very literal) dirty
laundry. He is heavy, yes, but he's still my brother.
In the end, "Fat White Vampire Blues" is that odd bedfellow who wears
its high and low culture roots proudly, and helps to blur the
distinction between the two. It revels in the bayou-like miasmic
paste of its varied inspirations (pulp fiction, horror movies and comic
books, etc.), while turning over that mulch to find surprising tweaks
and flashes of light in those very genre-specific constrictions. Who knew
that a vampire's ability to take the form of a bat or wolf was both
tied to cultural prejudices and Einstein's theories on "Conservation of
Mass"? Well, Mr. Fox knew, apparently, and he's more than happy to pass that information onto us. He's cooked up a spicy gumbo of a book whose racial politics and potty-humor might make you a bit queasy at times, but like any good Bourbon Street drunk, you're still left asking for more.

Fun & Educational with nice photos

What a fun book! A simple, easy, and educational read for all children. My niece's 7th birthday is coming up next week, so I bought her this book to go along with a giant 30" Viahart stuffed Cheetah I got her! This won't be the first time getting her a giant stuffed animal and matching book;) I think it makes the perfect gift "set". This is however my first purchase for The National Geographic book line for kids and I think it's fabulous! I will surely be purchasing more in the future.

The only thing I would have added to improve the book would be more detail on the last couple pages that were dedicated to saving the cheetahs. It would have been nice to see resources listed for organizations that save cheetahs.

All in all, it's a great, fun, easy, and educational read that I would recommend! :)

I strive to make my reviews as helpful as possible to others, because helpful and honest reviews are just as important to me when I am deciding on what to buy. I hope my review has been of help to you!

Very informative and engaging nonfiction for children.
By AM
I ordered this book for a second grade research project. The students were able to gather most of the information they needed from this one book. It contains wonderful, vivid photographs. If you are a primary grade teacher, the National Geographic Readers are perfect for teaching nonfiction text elements along with nonfiction reading comprehension (Common Core ELA Standards). Parents and children will enjoy these engaging books at home, too. They are interesting and informative.

A Fun and Educational Book for Kids!
By Dre
National Geographic Kids books are great. The illustrations and photographs are amazing and the information they provide is set up in a way that keeps your children engaged and interested. They have small paragraphs and pop out boxes of facts over beautiful photographs and illustrations, instead of just a boring block of text. My girls love them and we have amassed quite a collection.

This particular book is about Cheetahs. They talk about many things including the differences between cheetahs and other wild cats, their speed, where they live, baby cheetah cubs, and even how to protect them from extinction. My 6 year old loves learning the facts and reading the books while my 3 year old loves the pictures, especially the baby pictures. My 6 year old has been really interested in these types of educational books lately and has been asking for more, which we are happy to encourage.

We have purchased many of the National Geographic Kids books for our collection and they are a big hit in our house. There are so many different books with various subjects that will appeal to any kid. These are highly recommended. If you haven't already, do your kids a favor and start their collection today.

About the Author

Arnold Johansson

Arnold Johansson is a versatile information technologist with a true passion for improving people, businesses, and organizations using "good tech". As an early adapter of the Java language and its growing ecosystem, he is an outspoken proponent of secure Java Enterprise solutions and real Open Source software. After nearly two decades as an IT consultant in many levels and verticals, Arnold now focuses on leading organizations on an architectural stable and efficient path of excellence.

Anders Welen

Anders Welen embraced the object-oriented techniques of the Java language early in life, and later evolved to Java Enterprise specifications. As a true believer and evangelist of Open Source, he naturally discovered the JBoss Application Server, which led to years of providing expert consultation, training, and support for the JBoss and Java EE infrastructures. As a result, Anders has seen a lot of both good and bad architectures, software solutions, and projects, most of which were a struggle from time to time due to performance problems. Whenever Anders, through presentations, consultation, training, and (in this case) a book, sees that what he's trying to explain is getting through and the audience is picking up on it and adopting it for their own challenges, it gives him a warm feeling inside.

All around tuning advice, zeroes in on Wildfly with expert-level tips
By Richard J. Wagner
This book focuses on the latest iteration of the JBoss JEE server, Wildfly. Like many performance books, it offers advice that applies to performance in general, JEE specifically, and a particular technology (Wildfly) especially.

The first three chapters deal with methodology for performance tuning, tools of the trade (especially open source tools), and JVM tuning. The first chapter contains material that will be largely familiar to anyone who's done much tuning in the past, but is good for those who are new to tuning. The second chapter outlines tools that will probably be familiar to experienced tuners. There are some good tips here. The third chapter explains JVM tuning. Combined, these three chapters make for a good background for Java tuning.

The next six chapters deal with Wildfly. They introduce the server in general, then specifically address EJBs, Persistence/JPA, Web Container (Undertow), Web Applications and Web Services (to include REST), and JMS. These chapters include some really good expert-level tips. If you are a user of Wildfly (or the product version, Red Hat's EAP) then these chapters alone will probably make the book a worthwhile purchase. There's some good advice here for users of other JEE servers, but the real value here is for JBoss users.

The final chapter covers Wildfly clustering. If you use Wildfly (or the product equivalent, EAP) for production use, you will want to know about clustering.

I thought the book was very strong from a technical standpoint. Users of Wildfly (future EAP) will be quite pleased with the solid advice provided.

All things considered, I'd recommend this book for any Wildfly / EAP user. Users of other JEE servers (WebSphere, WebLogic) might consider it, but won't get the same bang for the buck. Users of JEE in general should benefit strongly from the first chapters, but the application-specific tips won't all fit.

About 300 pages, this one is worth the money if this is your work area.

Another Disappointing JBoss Book
By Joe Hindsley
Maybe my expectations were set too high, but what a disappointment this book is.

This book is full of grammatical errors. Some of them read so poorly (for example, the description of the blocking-bounded-queue-thread-pool) that it leaves the reader wondering if the editor has any kind of proofreading skills at all.

The descriptions of the subsystems are severely lacking: only 5 are mentioned (according to the index) and some of those are only presented with a couple of paragraphs that leave you wondering what they are really for. I would expect more information from this book: a comprehensive list of subsystems, with brief description of what they do, and a better explanation of their configuration settings and how they affect the system. Hand waiving is done at the beginning of that chapter. To paraphrase: "You can turn off the different subsystems, but some of them are dependent on others to that might break things. Good luck cause we're not helping you with that. Here are 5 that may or may not be important."

So, what I'm left with is what I guess I has been my experience with JBoss documentation in general. Another source that has sparse pinpoints of information that needs to be parsed and gleaned and hopefully made understandable enough to be applied in a meaningful way.

Tuning WildFly with WildFly Proprietary and Java EE Standard Approaches
By Dustin Marx
Wildfly Performance Tuning presents concepts, tips, and suggestions related to performance of WildFly-hosted applications that include both Java EE standard performance ideas and ideas that are unique to tuning WildFly performance. Because WildFly is an implementation of Java EE, it's not surprising that some of the performance tuning concepts covered in this book are Java EE general and could be applied to other Java EE application servers as well.

"WildFly Performance Tuning" has ten chapters and the first, second, third chapters and sixth chapters have very little WildFly-specific detail in them. They are more general and mostly apply to other Java EE application servers as well. In some cases, they are even more general than Java EE, applying to Java SE and other languages in some cases. Chapter 3 is among the best introductory overviews I have seen of general JVM tuning principles in a single chapter and mostly applies to any JVM development (not limited to WildFly).

Chapter 4 is a general WildFly tuning chapter and the remainder of the chapters focus on components/specifications of Java EE (and of WildFly). For example, Chapter 5 covers tuning EJBs on WildFly and Chapter 9 covers tuning JMS on WildFly. Most of these chapters provide WildFly-specific concepts and examples as well as Java EE-general concepts and examples.

Packt Publishing provided me with a PDF version of this book that is the subject of this review, but I have received no compensation for the review.

It was nice to have the color screen snapshots in the PDF version of this book. The code examples are well-formatted, but they do not have color coded syntax and do not include line numbers.

The Gorge is a story of the triumph of will and perseverance by four young girls of pre-history. Micaela is of the people, one of four young orphaned girls within the clan where all females are chattel. All four eagerly anticipate the annual winter migration and the opportunity to find a mate. But first, they must undergo a rite of passage. The Breeding is an ancient ceremony, vital to the continued existence of the clan. It is also the one time when young women have any semblance of worth. But The Breeding has unexpected and disastrous consequences, leaving the girls outcasts with few prospects and little chance of survival. Now they must stand together against a brutal environment, wild animals, a vicious tribe known as the Raiders, and their own society. No one expects them to succeed—except possibly for the enigmatic Others, who move quietly among the People, pursuing their own mysterious goals A deft exploration of the subjugation and exploitation of women in early civilizations, The Gorge recounts the adventures, trials, bravery, and sacrifice of four girls struggling to understand their place in a world that undervalues their skills, their dreams, and their abilities. Together, they will prove themselves the equals of any warriors, triumph over their enemies, and learn to defend themselves both morally and intellectually. With a little help from the Others, they might just change the world. The Gorge contains sexually explicit material.

Review
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.

About the Author

What many call careers, Joe Zeigler calls interests. Beginning as a firefighter in Williamsburg, Virginia, Zeigler left to earn a degree in fire protection from Oklahoma State University, picking up a BA in business along the way.

Taking a job as a fire protection engineer with Kemper Insurance somehow led to a ten-year stint as a professional motorcycle racer.

In 1981, Zeigler founded the Penguin Road Racing School and wrote How to Fly, a how-to manual for motorcycle racers. Intrigued by the developing world of personal computers, he retired from racing to become a consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation.

Zeigler launched six computer stores and the nation’s first computer discount warehouse—only to lose them at the hands of an arsonist. He rebounded to write FirePrograms, a software package for fire departments and the world’s first low-priced UPS shipping manifest software. He sold both businesses to focus on his writing.

Joe is also a pilot and a cook with his own line of hot sauce and feels ill-defined by any single idiosyncrasy.

A look into the past that possibly formed our future.
By Robert L. McClellan
My first introduction to ancient life and experiences was through a movie called
“Quest for Fire”. There were clans of people who had not developed language yet, but
communicated through gestures and groans. Not one word was spoken in the movie. Their fire went out and the search for a replacement was their top goal. Their quest was for fire. Along the way, they learned to make it.

"The Gorge" picks up perhaps thousands of years later with the ability to communicate, reason, and pursue goals. The development of trade, fabrication of tools and barter to extend their ability to survive. Yet still primitive in comparison to the world we live in today.

I have traveled throughout the South West and enjoyed visiting cliff dwellings that inhabitants used to survive. The inhabitants left a long time ago, never to return. "The Gorge" helped me to comprehend the complexity of their existence and perhaps reasons for their final departure.

This delightful book is an incite on what life could have been like centuries ago. Some societies
traveled from one location to another for climate change. Some remained at one place year round.
Each had their own customs and evolved as they learned to co-operate with other clans. I
found myself fearing the “Raiders” yet appreciating them after getting to know that several members
had kindness, compassion and did the right thing. Even sparing a life when ordered to take it. An enjoyable read for me.

A satisfying, easy, fast-moving read
By David L
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways. Their descriptive names include The People, The Traders, The Raiders and The Cliff Dwellers.

The author does a fine job of revealing the characters in the story, mostly by a series of human interactions and disasters they must overcome. They need to survive various challenges such as famine, flood, extreme weather, animal attacks, and attacks from other groups. He mixes in a satisfying array of descriptive facts about ancient times such as basket-weaving, flint arrowheads, bowstrings and rope made from hemp, and the making of Agave liquor, among many others.

Sex plays a vital role for these people, since their lives are short and they need to breed often to ensure their survival. The author's treatment of the subject is down to earth and entertaining but not pornographic. He describes the other exigencies of life, such as hunting and the gathering and preparation of food, encampment, travel, trading and defense in a colorful and informative way.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.
