it took forever for them to finally talk openly
By RomReader
Estranged wife sees her husband Hero again after she suddenly left him 3 years before. They have to pretend to be happily married to find the culprit who's planning on sabotaging the royalty of a little European kingdom. Their work together shows them they still have strong feelings for each other. But heroine can see that Hero is still very much married to his military career. Hero on the other hand still doesn't understand why she left what he thought was a good marriage. When will these 2 openly talk about what happened in the past?

It took until page 142 for Hero & heroine to finally talk about why she left him 3 years ago. For 141 pages, they tiptoed around the issue. Their marriage must've been based on sex & niceties if these 2 couldn't even talk about why she left for weeks when they say each other again & not even considering the 3 years that passed when they could've emailed or phoned or wrote each other. Heroine wanted Hero to prove she meant more to him than his military job by chasing after her when she left him. But he didn't because of his pride & this strange sense of respecting her space. So she keeps her miscarriage & her feelings about being abandoned by Hero due to his job a secret all that time. While Hero kept his love & waiting for heroine to go back to him all to himself too. These 2 were driving me nuts with their passivity & secret pinings! The sexual chemistry was good but it was pretty much the only thing going for them. The only other thing I liked about these 2 were that both remained celibate during their 3-year estrangement.

The action-suspense parts were predictable & uninteresting. They seem like page-fillers & gave an excuse for the main characters to see each other again. Overall pacing dragged.

Minimally recommended.

Mediocre
By Cloggie Downunder
Tycoon Warrior is a book by Sheri Whitefeather in the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Lone Star Jewels series. Dakota Lewis, ex-soldier, is still involved in dangerous missions. And it was during such a mission that his wife, Kathy left him. But she has never told him why, and she is beginning to feel guilty about that. For one thing, she still loves him. For another, she might just be asking something of Dakota that is unreasonable. This is a somewhat tedious romance that pivots on the lack of communication between husband and wife. The hero is rather too perfect; the heroine, simply frustrating. It is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. It would have benefitted from some judicious editing. Mediocre.

The story drags
By Becka
This is the second story in this series that was like this: there is no communication between the main characters and the story drags out until it is almost painful. No... it was painful! I kept hoping that there was more to the story than regrets and sadness, but I ended up pretty disappointed. Especially at the end with the way the characters reacted to something very important that would affect the rest of their lives. I want to say more, but I don't want to give out spoilers... so I'll say I should have went with my gut and passed on this one. 2 1/2 stars

TalkAbility answers this need with a wealth of practical strategies that parents can build into their child s everyday life. What links Winston Churchill, Alan Sugar, Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver, David Bailey, Will Smith and countless other high achievers in a huge range of fields? In this paradigm-shifting book, neuro-learning experts Drs Brock and Fernette Eide describe an exciting new brain science that reveals that people with dyslexia have unique brain structure and organisation. While the differences are responsible for certain challenges with literacy and reading, the dyslexic brain also gives a predisposition to important skills and special talents. While dyslexics typically struggle to decode the written word, they often also excel in such areas of reasoning as mechanical (required for architects and surgeons), interconnected (artists and inventors); narrative (novelists and lawyers), and dynamic (scientists and business pioneers). The Dyslexic Advantage provides the first complete portrait of the dyslexic brain. With much-needed prescriptive advice for parents, educators and dyslexics, The Dyslexic Advantage provides the first complete portrait of dyslexia. Supporting their claims with groundbreaking science and interviews with successful dyslexics and innovative teachers, the authors of this essential book show how the unique strengths of dyslexia can be captured for success at home, at school and at work.

Review
The Dyslexic Advantage shows you how to celebrate rather than suffer from your dyslexia. Children don't need to sit at the back of the class, panicking; they can learn to excel The Times

From the Inside Flap

If you ask contractors, engineers, rocket scientists, or even famous mystery novelists if they had trouble with reading in school, an astonishing number will answer: "Yes, how did you know?"

Authors Brock and Fernette Eide know why people in these professions tend to have had difficulties with reading and writing. The cause is simple: their brains are different.  Individuals who have dyslexia, whether it is mild or severe, think uniquely about what they see and learn in their everyday lives, whether it's in a classroom, at a job, or in their own home.

In this revolutionary book, the Eides use new brain science and their expertise in neurology and learning disorders to explain how individuals with dyslexia not only perceive the written word differently, but also conceive space more intuitively, see connections between unrelated objects, and are able to make great leaps creatively that others simply miss.

Presenting a variety of case studies and true stories to support the science, The Dyslexic Advantage demonstrates that each individual with dyslexia is unique, and faces specific challenges while, at the same time, experiences remarkable talent and ability.  Carefully explaining how four areas dyslexics excel in appear in the activities of children and adults, the Eides provide useful advice on how to maximize an individual's potential in: material reasoning (used by architects and engineers); interconnected reasoning (scientists and designers), narrative reasoning (novelists and lawyers); and dynamic reasoning (economists and entrepreneurs.)

Putting emphasis on the advantages of the dyslexic brain rather than the well-trod challenges with reading and writing, the Eides blend advice from successful individuals who learned to excel at "being dyslexic" with findings from their research that parents, educators, and individuals with dyslexia can use to help maximize their dyslexic advantage.

Providing the first complete portrait of dyslexia, the Eides show that it is not a condition people have, but rather a part of who someone is―which can be cultivated as a great strength.

Finally - a scientific look at the advantages of dyslexia
By D. A. J.
Now "THIS" is the book I have been waiting for. As a dyslexic myself and the parent of at least one dyslexic (and gifted) child - this book is life changing, especially in terms of the educational outlook for my children. The Eides have done what so many "claim" to do in their books, but never really get there. They show clear, concrete, and proven advantages to the way the brain works for dyslexics, and shows why those advantages have "trade offs" when it comes to learning things such as reading, writing, and spelling. Basically, the way the dyslexic brain works, people with dyslexia tend to be much, much better than average in four particular areas - described as the M.I.N.D. areas. These cover things such as being able to see objects in 3D and manipulate them on ones mind (a great skill for Engineers, designers, builders, etc.), the ability to see advanced and complex connections between things (an amazing skill for systems engineers, entrepreneurs, psychologists, lawyers, etc.), amazing long term memory, etc. While these advantages are amazing, great, needed, and should be utilized to the best of ones ability - these advantages are there because the dyslexic brain is wired in such a way to support them. The down side is this wiring is the most inefficient way to learn the skills of reading, writing, and spelling. While those are true downsides, that doesn't mean dyslexic individuals can't learn to read, write, and spell - most do. The Eides just show a much better route to those skills.
Another BIG thing I love about this book is how they extensively cover accommodations (like speech-to-text software and digital books). In most dyslexic individuals, there will be a point in which one reaches diminishing returns in terms of reading, writing, and spelling - no matter how much intervention they won't get any better than that point. However, that doesn't mean their learning must stop - the proper accommodations will allow these individuals to reach their full potential in life. And surprisingly, the full potential of a dyslexic is actually more "successful" than a non-dyslexic. Dyslexic individuals are over represented in the top tiers among almost all professions - especially the sciences, engineering, and creative fields (writing, acting, art, music, etc.). Yes, dyslexics who struggle with reading and writing turn out to be amazing writers of everything from fiction to fantasy books (and I suppose one accommodation is hiring a good editor who can see past the spelling mistakes to the amazing content).
The last part of the book deals with the best ways of teaching reading, spelling, and writing to dyslexic individuals - from elementary to college to adults in the workplace. The advice and tips are amazing and I plan on incorporating many of them immediately into our homeschooling plans. They also cover proper accommodations depending on the skill and level of the individual. Another important point of this section is to also encourage the strengths of individuals with dyslexia. Again - there is going to be a point of diminishing returns in teaching reading and writing based skills - so also focus on those areas in which dyslexic individuals thrive.
Another area is the best educational options for gifted individuals. Now this will be the area many parents will struggle with. The truth is traditional school environments are NOT set up to accommodate dyslexic individuals. It isn't for lack of want, but many educational institutions just don't fully understand dyslexia for what it is, and what it isn't. As a result, the best fits for dyslexic students (at least for some time in their for educational years) might be special education classrooms (those that focus on education and not so much behavior I am assuming), schools that specialize in teaching dyslexic students, private schools that allow children to work at their own pace (think Sundry or Reggio or Montessori), and finally homeschooling.
The final chapter and another gem of this book is the resources section. It has websites and resources to cover the tips they described in the text.
A lot of thought and and research, and I believe passion and love went into this book. Again, it really will be a life changer for many individuals with dyslexia (heck, there is even a section that covers adult dyslexics in the workplace!)

A 'Get-Out-of-Jail-Free' card. Finally! The positive of being dyslexic! Updated 06 Sept 2015
By Rugby in 2016!
This book gives specific references & examples to how and why the dyslexic brain processes the way it does. And presents it with its advantages and trade offs. At the end of the book the authors give specific reference and suggestions on what jobs may best suit each or combo of those processing styles (MIND), as well as reading, writing, thriving in high school & college, and so on.
For myslef, after reading this book, I felt like I finally got my 'get out jail free card'. It's like I was interviewed for the book along with these other amazing people who have created wonderful lives for themselves using the advantages of their dyslexic processing brains. I have yet to read a better book that so positively and specifically demonstrates exactly how I view and experience the world, as well as the struggles of explaining what that 'looks' like and why certain things 'just don't work for me'. Despite the typical struggle of school, I have always felt like being dyslexic WAS an advantage but didn't have the verbage to express why/how. Now with this fabulous book as reference, I have access to the comparatives needed to express it / the differences of processing styles. (An example, viewing things in 3D while non-dyslexic processing brains view things in 2D. And so on)
And the best part of this book, in my opinion, it presents 'being dyslexic' in a postiive light with the 'trade offs' being secondary, but also workable. All those years of hasty judgements, unkind/cruel words, and misunderstood diagnosis swept away after reading this book.
I've purchased two more copies. One for my wonderful Viiolin instructor and the other for a family member who's 5 year old son may also have the same Dyslexic Advantage.
With Gratitude to the Eide's for their work and interviews & to all other trailblazers assiting with bringing new light to the dyslexic processing mind.

UPDATED: 06 Sept 2015
As I mentioned towards the end of my review I purchased a copy for my Violin instructor. She's a saint by all terms as she's patiently worked with me for the past few months, using the info in this book, (as well as her own skill sets of - observation, listening to my feedback & adapting to my 'way' of understanding) - to help me create a 'sheet music' version of the songs I am learning because I can't read the music. The best way I can describe it is if someone were to have vertigo and then try and look at the sheet music. That, and I've asked around and looked on line. I've yet to find any info for/about sheet music for dyslexics. So we are establishing our own based on M. I. N. D. and her musical knowledge.
Instead of notes we created a format using colored paper and symbolism for bow strokes and finger position much like one would use a ledger for reading a Thomas Brother Map book. This works comfortably for me from my years of truck driving. I know each of us is different for the way our minds process but I have found this book such a great reference for adapting otherwise almost impossible ways of acheiving certain goals - like playing the violin.
Again with Gratitude, I submit this updated review.

The best resource so far!
By David
I'm 39 years old and ran my own landscaping business for 20
years. I all ways had problems with reading, writing and math. I failed the sixth grade and was sent off to boarding school. Unfortunately witih the bad economy I lost my business. Now it was time to face my demands once again. I tried going back to school to improve my skills, for some reason I thought
Things would be different. They weren't.

To make a long story short I've been through tons of testing over the years. They all said one thing, that I was lazy. I was tested again and was diagnosed as having dyslexia. I bought this book soon afterwards. It was one of the best resources I've come across yet. I found myself in so many instances. I think this book would be positive for anybody with this problem.

The Oxford Handbook of Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe and Colonial America (Oxford Handbooks), by Brian P. Levack

The essays in this Handbook, written by leading scholars working in the rapidly developing field of witchcraft studies, explore the historical literature regarding witch beliefs and witch trials in Europe and colonial America between the early fifteenth and early eighteenth centuries. During these years witches were thought to be evil people who used magical power to inflict physical harm or misfortune on their neighbours. Witches were also believed to have made pacts with the devil and sometimes to have worshipped him at nocturnal assemblies known as sabbaths. These beliefs provided the basis for defining witchcraft as a secular and ecclesiastical crime and prosecuting tens of thousands of women and men for this offence. The trials resulted in as many as fifty thousand executions.

These essays study the rise and fall of witchcraft prosecutions in the various kingdoms and territories of Europe and in English, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies in the Americas. They also relate these prosecutions to the Catholic and Protestant reformations, the introduction of new forms of criminal procedure, medical and scientific thought, the process of state-building, profound social and economic change, early modern patterns of gender relations, and the wave of demonic possessions that occurred in Europe at the same time. The essays survey the current state of knowledge in the field, explore the academic controversies that have arisen regarding witch beliefs and witch trials, propose new ways of studying the subject, and identify areas for future research.

Review
"I can't imagine how this nook could be better...the definitive read for Bowiephiles." Uncut. "The complete David Bowie certainly lives up to its title... Pegg's opinionated and witty prose turns it into that rare thing: a reference book that sparkles." MOJO. "Pegg has a keen critical intelligence." Sunday Telegraph.

From the Publisher
The career of David Bowie has been one of the most colorful and intriguing in modern rock history. Now, in "The Complete David Bowie," Nicholas Pegg chronicles the star's every move--from his first appearance as balladeer Davy Jones in the 60s, and his spectacular, gender-bending debut in the 70s as Ziggy Stardust, which made him an international sensation, to his starring roles in films like "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and his more mature work on albums like "Zion." This definitive reference also includes a detailed production history and an analysis of all of Bowie's albums; hundreds of entries with facts and anecdotes about all his songs, including unreleased rarities; and set lists and histories of every live show. Moving beyond his music, the book charts Bowie's career on stage and screen, his videos, and more.

About the Author
Nicholas Pegg is an actor, theatre director and writer. This book is the culmination of a lifetime’s interest in David Bowie’s work.

Much More than Encyclopedic, This Is A Complex Structured Reference Guide When Used Right
By James W Polichak
As so many others have said, this is a wonderful reference book, and wonderful for that purpose.

But there is another book that is obscured by the focus and format of the book: a reference biography, a strange creature, one eagerly sought by some but rarely found.

The main focus of this encyclopedia are the songs. All the songs - songs released, songs performed, songs written for others, songs written by others, songs unreleased, songs partially formed, songs of rumor only, even songs of rumor disconfirmed. This forms the bulk of the work, and is the first section. The presentation is alphabetical. This has its advantages and its drawbacks. If you want to know about a specific song, it is easy to find. But the lack of connection to the album or chronological framework impedes a more cohesive understanding. In this electronic era, my hope would be for a Complete David Bowie 2.0, where all options exist for the compendium of songs, alphabetical order, album-by-album, year-by-year, concert tour-by-concert tour.

This framework is already largely present in the other sections of the book, especially sections 2 (The Albums) and 3 (Live). I recommend highly starting by reading the section on Official Albums first and Live second, which is what I did. Weaving them together would offer another insightful framework over Bowie's career, as most albums were followed by a tour. Since Bowie was frequently hard at work (or even substantially satisfied with) his next album while touring for the most recent release, there was also a tension displayed in the sequence of album-tour-album that was Bowie's practice, with the styling of the upcoming release influencing the presentation of the live songs from the most recent album and older choices.

Reading The Albums and Live straight through as an introduction provides valuable insights into Bowie's career, with enough information that I'd imagine just about anyone would learn from.

On a basic level, it gives a sense of the thematic structure of each album and the songs contained within. Obviously, from listening to the albums we've developed our own senses of these themes and how they connect and conflict through the songs. But Pegg provides information about the people Bowie was working with in a way that is difficult to derive from listening and liner notes, and even more so about the people Bowie was being introduced to (Elizabeth Taylor arranged for Bowie and John Lennon to meet at a party at her house in 1974), friends with (John Lennon introduced Bowie to the Uncle Floyd show of Heathen's Slip Away; now I can imagine myself as a child sharing my Uncle Floyd time with David and John, from 50 miles and more than a couple of decades away).

It also gives a more complete, often challenging and corrective, interpretation of Bowie's albums as they were intended (expressed through interviews with Bowie and others involved). This is combined with details about the critical and popular response to the albums. This comes at a level that would be impossible for just about anyone who wasn't present throughout Bowie's 5 decade career to develop. I mostly came into the Bowiesphere in the mid 1990s, not long before 1.0 Outside was released. That was also the time, though, of both the Rykodisk extra-track releases and the BMG Music Club "Buy 1 CD at regular price, get 7 free", so I quickly amassed everything from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters, and those came with the extra tracks. Then came the mid-1990s creative spurt that, for me, was paired with trips to Europe where high-quality bootlegs were much more available and much cheaper than in the US. It was a lot to enjoy, a lot to process, but also done mainly in an absence of historical progress and context.

Pegg's Album and Live performance analysis sections gave me much of this structure that I hadn't had time to develop on my own. It still came in a brief amount of time, for me these sections were page-turners that kept me up too late. The 1970s were truly a time of chaos kept barely controlled. Bowie's stamina, appetite for consumption and for creation, ecumenicalism, much more apparent and much more impressive. So much was somehow both "make it up as you go along" and "I meant it all the time" in an incredible way.

The Albums and Live sections also revealed just how much of Bowie's reputation, the "Bowie is..." and the "What is Bowie?" was created in retrospect. Much of his art was treated critically and skeptically by the music press and especially the more mainstream press. The same was true for the young music enthusiasts out there, especially in the US. Ziggy Stardust in 1972 was a bigger star than David Bowie, but Ziggy Stardust was a bigger star in 1977 than 1972, in 1982, in 1987, in 1992, in 1997... but somehow by 2002 David Bowie was most definitely a bigger star than Ziggy Stardust.

The albums became more of a critical presence and on the radio and turntable as the tours grew and became more orchestrated - and as Bowie took up just about every opportunity to collaborate, to appear on television. Pegg's work shows that at least one group seemed to fully embrace Bowie from the start even if it had dangerous effects, Hollywood and the American film and TV star community. But it was when Bowie moved on to the next album and persona that the previous album became the "definitive" Bowie album, and the critical success in hindsight. Until 1982...though Pegg provides evidence, however uncomfortable now, that the tragedies of the 1980s were frequently given more favorable critical and popular responses than his now enshrined and bronzed giants of the 1970s. Perhaps we can put that up to a desire to over-compensate for the overly challenging response given to his 1970s work. But also to a desire to be seen to embrace the latest shift in style from the start as Bowie's reputation for being ahead of the trends grew, that somehow recycling Iggy Pop songs and a collage of other cover songs would be considered ground-breaking in a year or two. Even Tin Machine.

As we know, every release from Black Tie White Noise was Bowie's strongest work since Scary Monsters, except Reality, following Heathen like Lodger following Low and "Heroes".

Even if you were there, Pegg's compendium is valuable to understanding the Bowie "projects" of this second phase. Bowie's early and full absorption with video, multi-media, and the internet, and his early and full campaign to further their development and integration into the world of music came to their apogee with 1.0 Outside, Hours..., and Heathen. The wealth of material produced with these music albums can be seen to be as integral to the music as the live performances, making the boundaries of these artistic endeavors undefinable. Bowie himself was also more forthcoming about himself and his art, happily discussing the tensions within his art that had always existed more explicitly, but also the new tension between the dark elements of his creative output and his happiness with his married life with Iman in Manhattan.

At the same time, the greater wealth of material, of videos and video games, of remixes and "extra tracks" in an abundance nearly the size of a traditional 1970s album, all of this, intentional and unanticipated, has the power to turn the traditional listener into the interactive participant that these new media were always pimped out to be. You may, as I do, disagree with the decisions to put certain tracks on the official albums and leave others off. You may, as I do, consider "Thursday's Child" to be a weak song whose primary goal seems to be to make the strongest statement possible that we are no longer in the Outside-Earthling zone. So you may substitute "We All Go Through" at the start. You may be of the opinion that "Seven" is a weak song and eject it for "We Shall Go To Town". And the phony marketing separation is discarded, and the strength of Hours... is realized, as well as its continuity with Bowie's earlier 1990s albums.

Just an example. I find interesting integrations can be achieved with elements of Black Tie White Noise, The Buddha of Suburbia, and 1.0 Outside. Heathen and its abundant bonus tracks including the Toy remixes provide another sonic playground... Sure, I was doing this before reading Pegg's book, but it was Pegg's book that provided me with the David Bowie Stamp of Approval, an expansion of the cut-ups and rearrangements and juxtapositions of the pre-mass-computation era.

A gem not to be overlooked is Pegg's discussion of Heathen, the consensus selection for the crown jewel of the 1993-2003 "neo-classical Bowie" period. This section illustrates the ways that place affects the creative process and the ways it doesn't, both the grand scale of the recording studio in the midst of the largest city in the Americas and the relative solitude of the Catskills a few hours to the north, and on the shapes and sizes of the rooms used for creation within those places. It also brings Tony Visconti back, an important collaborator and influence that would continue until the end.

OK, it's a long book and it is a long review. There's much more in there, but start in the second half that connects the man with the music and the performance in a very rewarding way. To consider Pegg's book as something to grab when you want to check out a song here and there would be a waste.

The real deal for the true fan(atic)
By D. T. Douglas
If you consider yourself a true acolyte of all things Bowie, and require a complete reference and analysis on the major aspects of his career, this is for you.

You will never get tired of this book. It's about 2" thick and crammed with detailed histories and analyses of albums, songs, tours, filmography, and other things like art work and Internet info.

I've closely followed his entire career from early bands in London, all the way thru to his impeccably planned final exit. The world has lost a treasure, but he left us so many wonderful things, and this book is a trove of information and insights on them all.

Be warned: there are no pictures- this is not a coffee table book and it's not a biography. I believe most or all of the negative reviews came from people who did not understand this.

It's not a light read that you do cover-to-cover. It's more of an analytical reference book, so expect to read and use it in that mindset. That was clearly the author's intention, and this book fits that function perfectly. There are plenty of photo books and biographies on Bowie out there. This book fits a different niche, and does it impeccably - and down to the last detail. If you are a hardcore fan this is a "must have."

Also worth noting- the seller I used shipped the book very very quickly and it was perfectly packages. Much appreciated.

Incredible reference
By A. Miller
I'm the type of person who, when listening to music, takes a moment to search Wikipedia or Google to find out more information about it. What were the circumstances surrounding its release? How warmly was it received at the time? What kind of impact did it make on the artist's career?

If you're reading reviews of this book, then it's likely that you're similarly inquisitive. Luckily, I can assure you that this book is perfect for people like us.

As other reviews have stated, this is not a traditional biography. It is, however, a very, very comprehensive resource on practically all of Bowie's artistic output, and not just as a musician. The book is filled with quotes from people like Alomar, Visconti, Eno, and Bowie himself, both at the time of a work's release and also in retrospect. There's so much detail regarding Bowie's thematic intentions, how he approaches the recordings, and what he thinks of himself and his career, you come away from the book feeling as if you HAD just read a biography.

If you're thinking about it, I'd suggest just buying it. At this point, I'm not sure why I hesitated; it's been well worth the cost.

Review

"There are few works targeted primarily to the clinician dealing with optic neuropathies. Drs. Kline and Foroozan have provided just such a resource: concise summaries of the most common optic nerve disorders, with authoritative, current, and practical recommendations for management. This monograph is beautifully illustrated, well organized, and clearly written. I recommend it highly to anyone, in training or beyond, seeking to acquire a basic understanding of optic nerve disease." --Anthony C. Arnold, MD, Professor and Chief, Neuro-Ophthalmology Division, Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California, Los Angeles

"The diagnosis of optic nerve disorders relies less on the appearance of the optic disc than on the patient's history, clinical examination, and ancillary tests. Each case is a jigsaw puzzle: The more pieces one can put together, the faster the puzzle is solved. When I read the first edition, I thought it was absolutely the best book on the subject of optic nerve disorders I had ever read. There were pearls on every page! Dr. Kline now presents us with a second edition, enhanced by new contributions from a number of young, but distinguished co-authors, as well as a co-editor. Together, they have taken the book to a new level, incorporating both clinical findings and the results of both new and old imaging and electrophysiologic testing. This new edition sparkles in its presentations, explanations, and superb illustrations. It is truly a pièce de resistance of which the authors should be exceedingly proud." --Neil R. Miller, MD, FACS, Wilmer Eye Institute, John Hopkins Hospital
