Truly useful in breeding, because it is readable.

This readable work gathers the research, theories and opinions of his predecessors and presents his own opinions as well, giving arguments on both sides. Sections on determination of coat color were especially thoroughly done, relying heavily on Little's work, though differing sharply on a couple of points.

I believe any reputable breeder should own and study this book.

It is a starting place. You have to go beyond what is covered here. This will give you a good foundation in understanding the genetics of a dog.

I highly recommend this book for dog breeders of any breed, the author specializes in the German Sheppard, but this covers dogs in general.

SPOILER -- Not a HEA

I have never written a review - let alone, a negative one -- but I was so very upset by the ending of this book, that I felt the need to warn people that this is definitely NOT a HEA. If it upsets you to get all wrapped up in a story only to have the last chapter knock you for a loop, don't purchase this story!

Erik "Dash" Dashling - Reckless, Dangerous, and Smoking Hot

Erik "Dash" Dashling will have readers panting for more and wondering what this reckless and dangerous man will do to not only keep a job that's made for him but the girl he's willing to break all the rules for after only one night together.

Dash is definitely an interesting character. He's lived his life on the edge, following his own rules, and while his inability to follow the law should get him into a whole heap of trouble, he always finds a way out of it with his smooth talking and deep pockets, and this time around, it might just land him a career where he can use his adventurous side to put him on top. Tabatha is a work in progress. She's a smart mouthed and strong willed woman who fell for the wrong guy and ended up becoming someone she didn't recognize. But that's the past, and now she's all about reclaiming her old self and putting her needs above all else.

Both Dash and Tabatha have a lot at risk by not only putting their hearts on the line, but giving into a relationship that is not as open and honest as it should be, and because secrets always have a way of coming out, deception can lead to catastrophic events, which seems to be where Dash and Tabatha are headed as the story continues, both individually and as a couple, due to outside players and their vendettas against the hot couple, which spells trouble for their relationship and even Dash's career.

There's multiple factors to consider in Dash and Tabatha outing their relationship to the public eye and with Tabatha's insecurities and Dash's risky profession, nothing is cut and dry and the risks they face might be too much for them to endear, especially when the hits just seem to keep coming.

Tabatha and Dash are great characters and their banter and hot connection truly fly off the page, but they definitely frustrated me throughout the story, especially Tabatha. I know she's been hurt, and she's hesitant to start another relationship, but she cuts and runs over any issue, and I don't blame Dash for being frustrated. Do I condone some of his acts, absolutely not, but Tabatha needs to understand his side of the situation as well and that doesn't seem to happen throughout much of the text.

Dash is an angsty, emotional journey for not only the main characters but the readers as well. A lot of miscommunication and jumping to conclusions hinder the progress Dash and Tabatha make in their relationship and others' interference also complicates matters, but Shantel proves how much they belong to each other, heart and soul, regardless of the obstacles.

DASH makes a bad boy seem really good.

Note: No spoilers in this review so that you can enjoy the developments like I did...the good, bad and surprising.

I received this ARC from the author for a review today. Let me start with this: I LOVE DASH!!! Dash and Tabitha have one of those relationships that should never have worked out. The way it starts gives every indication that this is going to be a short, short novella. But Shantel brings the story of these 2 characters full circle. I do mean full circle.

Tabitha is one of those women you want to be your new BFF. She fits in with the girls and can hold her own with the men. She makes me laugh in her "get aways". Dash is not your typical book boyfriend. Just when you think you know who this character is going to be he surprises you. Sometimes you grow to love the main characters but in DASH you love Tabitha immediately. She looks at her life with some humor. There are a few darker moments in this book. Some seem like a natural part of the character development but there is one part that made me sit up in the dark and want to go and make Shantel buy me a drink. Make it a double!

The plot points take you in a direction that I for one was not expecting. I was surprised at the developments but it only made me love them more. The title is Dash but this story is about 2 people not looking for a relationship and as any good friend will tell you "When you are not looking you find it". This book can read as a stand alone or can easily open up the door for another installation in the life of Tabitha.

I loved that this book starts with (no spoiler) a speeding motorcycle ride. It immediately made me want to know Dash and what makes him tick. He seems like a rebel but you realize fairly quickly that he is someone who knows he can survive anything.

Good, but with some editorial issues

The book has some editorial issues, but it's still an exhaustive and comprehensive book on the subject of SS7.

The editorial issues appear to be sections that need updating. For instance, portions of the first chapter are very dated, and no longer apply in 2014. For instance, on page 33, the author writes about "PCS" as if it were still the late 1990s. Carriers have now started using their PCS 1900 MHz spectrum for LTE. Also, on page 28, the author writes, "...[there] are many obstacles to supporting Internet access on wireless phones. The bandwidth required to support Web access is not yet available in North America (although Japan and many other countries are already enjoying this level of access)." This was the case as recently as several years ago when we had feature phones with WAP browsers, but no longer applies in 2014 when we have 100 Mbps LTE networks and smart phones and tablets with fully-functional browsers like Chrome and Safari.

If you want to learn SS7, and you're willing to overlook some issues with dated content, then this is still a good book.

She is the author of the award-winning book Flakes, Jugs & Splitters: A Rock Climber's Guide to Geology and is the founder/director of GeoReach, an organization dedicated to science outreach and communication.

Very light reading, maybe targeted for the younger audience

This NatGeo Pocket Guide is a very mixed bag. The information on each specimen is very light, not containing much specific scientific data apart from the Mohs hardness. After a few pages on minerals and then rocks, the book randomly wanders off into fossils and "Structures and Landforms". Only about 87 pages are actually devoted to rocks and minerals, the rest is spent on fossils and various strata formations.

The best thing I can really say about this book is that the various pictures of the minerals and rocks are very nicely done, and include some nice museum quality examples. The small size of the book makes it much more pocket-worthy than some of the other guides.

However if you've got to pick only one book, this is still a far cry from the old standbys of National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals (National Audubon Society Field Guides) or A Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals (Peterson Field Guides). When I was a kid, the Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks & Minerals was always my first pick because they had the best pictures.

An inspirational book with superlative graphics.

ROCKS AND MINERALS OF NORTH AMERICA by Sarah Garlick is a 182-page booklet printed on glossy paper. Every page has a 1/3-page color photograph of a mineral, rock, fossil, or landform. All of the mineral photos are close-up pictures of rocks. The corners of the book are rounded, in order to prevent for the formation of dog-ears during use in the field. The graphics of the book are first-rate, in terms of quality of the image and creativity of the layout of the images and text.

CHAPTERS. The book contains an introduction (pages 6-11), which provides definitions of minerals, gems, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, and fossils. There are photos of granite, where the granite is caused to be multi-colored because of polarized light. There is a photo of Kinta Lake in Montana, where thousands of colorful stones can be seen in the water by the edge of the lake. The chapters are:

Chapter 1. Minerals (pages 12-55).
Chapter 2. Rocks (pages 56-99).
Chapter 3. Fossils (pages 100-119).
Chapter 4. Structures and landforms (pages 120-171).

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHS. The close-up photos are fine, but there are additional photographs, and these include landscapes, such as a photo of an igneous mountain (Cathedral Peak in Yosemite National Park) (page 61), an orange cliff made of syenite (page 62), a dark cliff with a white stripe made of diorite (p. 63), a dark spire made of gabbro (p. 64), a light gray cliff made of anorthoside in the Adirondacks (. 65), a light brown mountain made of peridotite (p. 66), a green mountain with snow, where the mountain is made of dunite (Dun Mountain in New Zealand)(p. 67), jagged spire made of rhyolite (p. 68), white cliff made of pumice (p. 69), valley containing obsidian (p. 70), light brown hill made of tuff (p. 71), Crater Lake National Park in Oregon with rock that is andesite (p. 73), jagged cliff made of diabase (p. 74), Devil's Postpile in the California Sierras, made of basalt (p. 75), and so on.

FOSSILS. The Fossils chapter has one page for each type of fossil, and these include petrified wood, graptolite, bryzoan, coral, trilobite, brachiopod, bivalve, plant fossils, gastropod fossil, and so on. Most of the fossil photos have a jet-black background. Each page has a 1/3-page photograph of the fossil, and the lower corner of each page has an alternate photo of the same type of fossil, printed on the white background of the page.

CONCLUSION. I was especially impressed by this book, in that it described many places where I've explored on weekends, and it detailed some of the rocks that have caught my attention over the past few decades. I have devoted myself to the obsidian at Glass Mountain, located just south of Fossil Beds National Monument in northern California. I have visited Crater Lake in Oregon on two occasions. I have visited Devil's Postpile, and have seen similar basalt formations in Oregon and on the Big Island of Hawaii. The book has a page on a landform called, "tafoni," and I have devoted three years of my life to photographing tafoni along the coast of northern California. The book includes a photo of Cathedral Peak in Yosemite, and I have taken the hike to Cathedral Peak. Cathedral Peak is arguably one of the ten most beautiful mountains in North America. The book has a page on sand dunes, and I have devoted two years of my life to photographic sand dunes in Death Valley National Park. Obviously, a book of such a modest size (182-pages) can only provide a sketchy introduction to the topic, but what a magnificent introduction we have here! My only criticism is that the book fails to identify the location of the rocks. The only reason why I was able to identify the locations of some of the landforms is because I have actually been to these places. In other words, without a disclosure of the locations of the photos, the book really cannot succeed as a teaching aid. Hopefully, the next edition of this book will disclose the locations.

I am not sure about the practical use of this book. I suppose that, if the novice finds an interesting rock or mineral in the book, he or she can use this as an inspiration to find more information about that particular topic from college textbooks, geologists, and naturalists employed by America's national parks, and so on. But the problem with this, is that finding information at the layperson's level, regarding geology, botany, animal ecology, and such, is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. Local libraries generally do NOT have this type of information. And college libraries do have lots of relevant information, but you require a Ph.D. in the topic to understand the info available from college libraries.

Not comprehensive, but good book for a young beginner

I was a rock fanatic as a child, and I would have loved this book. It is small and light, making it easy to carry. It is not a comprehensive book, but it's not supposed to be, so if you have a rock hound in your family is intermediate to advanced, this is not the book for them. The paper quality and some of the photos are not the best, either.

Interesting project

The idea behind the book is very good, because one can get a fast introduction to the subject. It is also suited for someone like me, lacking good mathematical skills, to remember many topics. On the other hand, some mistakes are left for the reader to find, and this is not fair for an undergraduate. A very good improvement would be made if answers to problems were provided.One more thing about it: if someone like Sommerfeld himself provided hints for solutions of his books` problems, why can't this book do the same?
