Amazing resource

I pre-ordered this book for my son and I have to say it has caused me to write one of my first ever amazon reviews. It really is an incredible guide to building with Lego. lots of full color diagrams, complete build instructions for many complex components that you can integrate into your designs. Linkages, mounts, gearing systems, the works. Discusses differences between stud and studless construction. Has some good simple explanations about speed/power/torque. Obviously it will be basic if you are a mechanical engineer, but if you have a middle or high school student this will give them a solid background into the physics as well as the design challenges along with some really great cookbook examples of components that will make their models great.

A Fantastic Introduction to LEGO Technic Building

Both new and experienced LEGO Technic fans will find Pawel Kmiec's Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide to be an excellent construction resource.

For the new builder, Kmiec offers multiple, full color illustrations on nearly every page, along with an excellent overview of beams, plates, bricks, gears and pins.

Meanwhile, expert builders will find themselves immersed in detailed explanations of linear clutches, ratchets, Scotch yokes, Oldham couplings and contraptions for which they never new the name! Best of all, though, is that Kmiec offers both mini and complete building examples to help the reader master each type of mechanism.

Whereas this book contains an incredible wealth of technical knowledge for all skill levels, one chapter that has incredible universal appeal is Chapter 11: Building Strong. Kmiec does a fantastic job of helping builders identify weak components or structural concerns, then offers robust tips for reinforcing gear boxes, strengthening load bearing structures and choosing the right parts from the start.

Since many Technic creations roll and/or move, Kmiec dedicates a good portion of his book to advanced mechanics, but even the newest Technic fans will enjoy these sections because he offers step-by-step instructions ranging from simple suspensions all the way to rough terrain tackling, pendular portal designs. Despite the complex sound and appearance of things, Kmiec breaks down concepts simply, ensuring your next car, truck, crane or robot will be remarkable.

Fans of both the old and new LEGO pneumatic systems will find two chapters dedicated to air powered contraptions, concluding with impressive instructions on how to build both a single and a two cylinder pneumatic engine.

Technic motors are favored by many builders and Kmiec offers a complete inventory of these mechanical marvels from past to present, followed by an interesting chapter on the various LEGO power supplies and remote controls. Kmiec concludes these chapters with a few fun projects on how to convert joystick-oriented remotes into more intuitive steering wheels (using Technic parts of course). Brilliant!

Adult LEGO fans looking to either educate themselves or advance their technical building techniques will find this volume to be the most comprehensive Technic resource available to date. LEGO MINDSTORMS builders, fans of construction vehicles, and builders who like to build crazy contraptions can all learn from this book, even if they've been building for years.

Full of learning and fun

This book is full of learning and fun! This would make a great book for someone who wants to add some mechanical excitement to their Lego creations or perhaps a father who want's to teach his son about mechanics. Even for someone who has done some technic building can learn a lot from this book. It is almost like a textbook, but done in a fun and practical way. The book starts with the basics of parts and slowly starts teaching you how to use these techniques to create bigger and better mechanical elements to add to your creations. It even has chapters devoted to helping you add electric motors and lights to power and illuminate your Lego creations.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who may have an interest in mechanics and how things work. It is a fun and easy way to learn these things by building them yourself.

The book for starting PowerShell

Don Jones is a well-known PowerShell MVP, trainer, author and blogger. This is his latest book on PowerShell. It sets out to teach a complete new comer to PowerShell how to use the language and commands to get stuff done. That is an important point - the book is about learning PowerShell so that you can use it to automate your administrative tasks.
The book is not an abstract look at PowerShell as a language but treats it as a tool you want to learn. It assumes you will be reading the chapters in order (which I would strongly recommend) and that you will be performing the exercises and running the code examples. Please make sure you do as it's the only way you will get the maximum benefit from the book.
As I have stated in other reviews I have three main criteria for judging a book:
* Is it technically accurate?
* Does deliver the material it claims to deliver?
* Is worth the cost of purchase and the time I spend reading it?
The first one is easy to deal with. Yes it is technically accurate. Don is an expert on the subject of PowerShell and more importantly for a book of this sort he is an expert on how to teach it. The book has been reviewed by a number of PowerShell experts and I performed the final technical review. It's as accurate as it can be!

Each chapter is designed to be read, and the exercises performed, in an approximately one hour lunch break. They are short, concise and very much to the point. Don has a very easy writing style that stops the topics being dry. The humour comes through in places to liven things up.
This is a book about doing. If we look at chapter 17 for instance - this is where scripting is introduced as the previous chapters show what you can do with PowerShell just from the command line. The chapter has 7 solid examples plus a lab. There are two callouts urging you to try the code and a list of ideas to try at the end of the chapter. All of this in 12 pages!
As well as the basics of the PowerShell language the book covers what might be considered more advanced topics such as remoting and PowerShell jobs.
In a nutshell this book teaches you how to use PowerShell. If you work through the chapters and labs you can't fail to learn how to use PowerShell. Will it make you an overnight expert? No it won't but it will provide a very solid foundation for you to progress and discover more about PowerShell yourself.
Don is a teacher and that comes through the way the book is written and constructed. In terms of my last two questions:
* Does it deliver the material it claims - YES. There were a couple of points in the book that made me think about me assumptions about PowerShell.
* Is it worth the money to buy and the time to read - YES.
On the back cover there's a quote of mine "The book I wish I'd had when I started PowerShell". That sums it up for me. It's an excellent introduction to PowerShell itself and achieves exactly what it states it will do.
If you are new to PowerShell, or want to get started with it I can't recommend this book strongly enough. Buy it. Read it. Use it.

Good book but...

It is a good book for learning like I wanted to. The issue is that there is no website(404 error) to see what the answers are nor is there a forum where Don Jones answers question like it is stated in the book. So when you get stuck somewhere in the book, like I am, you are on your own which defeats much of what is stated in the opening chapter. So if you can find another book, I would suggest that one instead as I am looking for another one now.

I posted on there asking about the book and one of the MVPs there contacted Don Jones and they are in the middle of updating the site so that is why it is down now. I'll give 5 stars when the site is up. Again it is a very good book to learn powershell if you are just getting into it. There are other resources on the web to find the answers that you need.

The site is up and has all the content as promised. One thing I will say is that he drills the help files into your head until you are sick of it but he is 100% correct. Now that I can understand what the help file says instead of the usual MS cryptic speak, it is so much easier. All the examples and labs work together to the point were i feel confident in just writing a script and troubleshooting it myself instead of googleing(don't know if that is a word yet) for an hour.

This is a beginners book but it gets you the foundation to go were you need to go with Powershell.

Great Textbook for Teaching a PowerShell Class

What I really like about the book are the lab exercises at the end of each chapter. This reminds me of the O'Reilly "Learning Perl" book, and makes it a suitable textbook for teaching a PowerShell course. I recently had to perform the role of instructor at an internal IT Workshop and instead of spending the time writing and testing my own lab exercises, I could use what has already been designed by a professional trainer. Be sure to check out the additional resources at morelunches.com, where the author provides a classroom trainer kit as companion content for the book. The lab manual included with the kit has a "guided experience" with step-by-step instructions for completing the labs, or a "challenging experience" where only the objective is given without the instructions. This really helps when there is a wide range of skill levels in a single class. He also has a complete video series available that covers all the topics in this book.

This is currently the book I recommend for people new to PowerShell, because it starts slowly and builds on what is learned in previous chapters. If someone has a programming background or is already very experienced with scripting, they may prefer the in-depth Windows Powershell in Action, Second Edition.

Magician, Father Merrick, James Chinery

This is a unique novel with a great storyline. It is a novel like no other that I have ever read.

As a philosopher, I find the concepts in this story very interesting. It is a book that will expand our view of what religion is and what our role in the world is as well. Father Merrick’s character in this novel is profound and soul-searching. Father Merrick was no ordinary priest. He knew suffering and unfairness very intimately being born with a birth defect that caused a lot of physical deformities of his face and head as well as other parts of his body. He looked strange to the world yet he did so much great work of mercy and compassion towards the most vulnerable.

As the story unfolds, it shows how newly consecrated magician, Anselm Van Helflyn, is sent out on a mission to investigate reports of dark magic that were practised in Askani. What the magician finds out will challenge everyone including the ordinary person and theologian. It will threaten the peace between man and elf too. It would seem that dark magic has returned to Superion.

I also find the title of the book very intriguing. The story line shows how we are both saints and sinners, and how human beings are capable of both. It seems that the world as a whole exudes both good and evil elements too. There is so much that is wonderful in the world. But there is also so much that is downright evil. That is perhaps how we find balance in the world. This is a book that will keep the reader reading and rereading the book for more depth and detail.

There is also a glossary of terms in Appendix 1 as well as a Glossary Theologica of Father Merrick’s journals in Appendix II in case the reader has any questions about any of the concepts or terms.

Thank you James Chinery for such a GREAT book! I will be talking about it for a long time with my friends, encouraging them to read it.

Dark past of characters allow for redemptive moments

In Bane and Blessing, the author has created not just a story, but an entire world called Superion set in an austere, medieval era. It is an epic story where the actions of the characters matter to the fate of the entire world. The storyline is provocative – involving a young boy with a potentially powerful gift, magic, armies, sickness, courage, providential encounters, and mystery after mystery to be unraveled. This is a gritty, fantasy story where the bad guys are not just bad but really, really evil. What made this story great to me were the characters -- mages, soldiers, and priests (oh my!). And my personal favorite, Cornelius, (think mad scientist meets Uncle Si) though a minor character is a great outlet for the author’s sense of humor. The author's humor is actually on display throughout the story through many characters, not just Cornelius. Some of the leading characters have dark pasts which allows for redemptive moments which we see throughout the story. They are also full of foibles in their present lives which are a source of much humor throughout the book. Yet when it matters most the heroes are noble, altruistic, and reflecting a light that is greater than themselves.

Theology and philosophy are also weaved in effectively – helping the reader make sense of the world and giving deeper meaning to the choices of the characters.

In closing I can say I learned at least two things from reading this story: pride comes before the fall and don’t eat the greenish cheese … it tastes like pig’s bottom. The author defies many of the stereotypes of Christian fiction by doing something so different it’s arguably a new genre all together. I wish there were many more stories of a similar sort. Five stars out of five.

Not Your Typical Fantasy Setting

This is not your typical fantasy story. It makes no reservations from the start that it is a Christian fantasy world, even though the place names and the world of magic do not place it anywhere obvious in medieval history. There are not theological ruminations in the story, per se; the Christianity comes from the matter-of-fact practice, piousness, and references to Christ from the characters. This did not disturb my enjoyment of the story proper, but I did wonder from time to time why the author did not just use Latinized European geography and make the setting very early medieval, at a time where there is not a lot of extant historical records to contradict such a decision of storycraft.

In any case, the author knows how to pace a story well. Nothing ever drags, and there is never unnecessary exposition. The reader receives all necessary information when appropriate, and it is usually done by way of in-story revelations. So readers desiring a fantasy world easy to get into, but still with some decent immersion will find this story very engage-able on that front.

The story itself is nicely executed; the author does his best to keep the reader guessing among the familiar aspects expected of a fantasy story, with thoughtful twists and turns. Not every character or situation is developed as far as could be, allowing one to presume there is more to come; the motivations of certain characters are left in the shadows, likely to preserve surprises, yet this left me scratching my head a time or two. Even so, the primary characters the author desires the reader to invest are given proper treatment, thus I am confident that the author has more to reveal concerning the others, and would do so in subsequent installments.

The most unique of the characters is Darryn, the demon-possessed gnome. The author has given the reader something of interest to ponder concerning this character and how such personas are typically presented and treated in fantasy.

All in all, a solid start here, with much to build on. I look forward to how Mr Chinery continues the adventures in his world. Definitely give it a go!

Fascinating facts!

This book covers many facts and observations recorded in Church history. If you don't believe in a spiritual world that is amongst us, this book will open your mind to its existence. Many of the lessons taught in religion classes about God, Jesus, Mary, the Saints, and Angels begins to resurface as you read this book. It will make be a stronger believer!
