About the Author
Christopher Frayling is an art historian, critic and award-winning broadcaster. He is a Professor Emeritus and a Fellow of Churchill College Cambridge and was awarded a knighthood in 2001 for "Services to Art and Design Education". He has published several books including, Ken Adam: The Art of Production Design and Once Upon a Time in Italy. His television and radio series include Nightmare: The Birth of Horror, America: the movie and Britannia: the film.

Stylebook of a bypassed future

Large, heavy, strongly bound, printed on thick gloss paper. It might do a convincing substitute for a Monolith itself except for some small details like an incorrect aspect ratio, the embossed printing, and its terrestrial origins; the little things...

The text covers the beginnings of the project from the close of production on "Dr. Strangelove" through to the end of filming, describing the exhaustive process of researching the technologies and appearance of a world then more than three decades into the future, and the experience of designing a Stanley Kubrick film.

The imagery, what I wanted most from this book, consumes the great majority of it. Artwork is mostly monochrome pencil, though there are included some publicity paintings/posters, B&W model and set photographs. Development drawings/sketches from collaborative efforts with NASA, IBM, various industrial manufacturers and run-of-the-mill futurists show part of the iterative process creating the look of the film. There is what one would expect--pressure suits, the Discovery, the Orion spaceplane, the Aries lunar shuttle, the lunar bus--in many, many pages of shape and detail sketches and wide variety as they were pushed through their development cycles. What was surprising was the inclusion of smaller details, things like matchbooks, built and unused props, development models of the monolith shape, and discarded scenes of life in the far off year of 2001. The work in quantity, quality, and depth, goes far beyond what I expected was needed for even a film as highly detailed as "Space Odyssey" was, approaching what I see created for more contemporary immersive games like Fallout, Destiny or Halo. (Readers ten years from now, stop laughing.)

My only complaint about the book is one that will likely cure itself over time: do not read it in an enclosed space. Like other art books published lately, the printing process leaves a very strong chemical odor that is likely *not* healthy and loaded with short lived byproducts. Open the book, flip through the pages and let it air out, or you will likely feel it in your sinuses... Aside from that minor detail, I very much liked the book, and will enjoy it for a long time to come.

Blueprint for a future yet realized.

A must read and see for the 2001 aficionado. It vividly shows the imaginative collaboration to depict a future that was wholly possible but still remains distant for lack of a pioneering resolve of an increasingly stagnant culture. This history honors the skill and talent of those that had faith in what man could achieve, perhaps one day we will catch up to them.

Making of books for this film are very rare, much like Bladerunner.
It is large and full of production drawings and rare pictures.
The text is informative and you get to see what went into the making of this historic Sci-Fi masterpiece.
Well worth the price.

Throughout the book specific, easily available, and affordable wines are profiled by winery. Special sections take this further: wine tasting "courses" of flights of different wines to compare; 101 favorite wines; and wines to begin a wine cellar.

Now, in it's 25 Anniversary edition it's been enlarged further with new sections on Austria, Hungary, and Greece. The wine lists have been updated and enlarged, and sections Chile, Argentina, and New Zealand have been expanded given their influence in the world of wine today.

I've completed two levels of the excellent Wine and Spirit Education Trust's wine programs. Enjoying the book so far, but none of the video codes work

Still reading the book but one thing I am finding VERY frustrating is none of the QR codes (or the Bitly addresses below them) are functional. They all go to error pages. I'm hoping the publisher sees this review and gets them fixed so readers can watch the videos. I will check them again and update my review when I'm done reading the book.

Excellent Introduction to Wine

This is a great introduction for anyone new to wine, as I was. This is not intended to be the most complete reference for all wine, but is instead a colorful, focused, entertaining overview of wine today. Each chapter focuses on a different region or type of wine, providing background information on each wine area, the author's favorite wineries/producers from the area, a sample tasting (he picks several wines for you to try and also suggests alternatives if you can't find those particular bottles) and a quiz at the end to help you retain some of that information. A great book for any wine lover!

About the Author
M. S. Howe has been Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Boston University since 1992. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (UK) and of the Acoustical Society of America. He was appointed American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Rayleigh Lecturer for 1997 for his 'pioneering contributions to the science and applications of acoustics'. He received the ASME 2000 Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics 'for important work on the interactions of fluid flow and structures, leading to an increased understanding of acoustic radiation generated from such interactions'. In 2001 he received the Aeroacoustics Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, for 'outstanding theoretical contributions to the understanding of the fundamental physical processes of noise generation in aeroacoustics'. Dr Howe is the author of Acoustics of Fluid-Structure Interactions (CUP 1998), Theory of Vortex Sound (in press, 2001), and has publishedmore than 180 papers in refereed Mathematics and Engineering journals.

The Propers of the Mass book contains English chant settings for the Entrance and Communion Antiphons given in The Roman Missal, 2010, as well as suggestions for the Offertory Antiphons, following the pattern of the Graduale Romanum,1974.

The Definitive Book of English Chant for the Ordinary Form

THIS is the book so many choirs and scholas have been waiting for, I would even say for 40+ years. If you want to sing Propers (specifically: Entrance, Offertory, and Communion antiphons) for the Mass in English, and you would like to do so with chant melodies that are inspired by Gregorian exemplars and at the same time idiomatic and comfortable in their vernacular adaptation, Fr. Weber’s magnum opus does the job better overall than it has ever been done before. This is hardly a surprise, since Fr. Weber has been chipping away at the task — introit by introit, offertory by offertory, communion by communion — for over twenty years. It can be said without exaggeration that this book has been in progress for decades. It is the definitive book of English plainchant for the Catholic liturgy.

First, the nuts and bolts. What exactly do we find in this 1,000-page volume?

1. An excellent Foreword by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone (pp. ix–xiii), explaining why the Propers should have pride of place at Mass, how this fits in with Vatican II’s call for participatio actuosa, and how this book responds to the call for a renewal of sacred music.

2. An “Introduction concerning Chant Technique” (pp. xiv–xx). Fr. Weber explains the fundamentals of chant (notation, neums, modes) in crystal clear prose for the non-expert, and offers a wonderful mini-treatise on the art of singing chant, with an explanation of how he has approached the task of setting the English language.

3. The rest of the book, divided into the Proper of Time (pp. 1–771: Advent, Christmas Time, Lent, Holy Week, Sacred Triduum, Easter Time, Ordinary Time, and Solemnities of the Lord), the Proper of Saints (pp. 772–917: solemnities of saints), Ritual Masses (pp. 918–67: ordinations and marriage), Varia (pp. 968–84: Asperges, Vidi aquam, Glory Be tones), and Indices (985–93).

For most antiphons, four settings are provided, from complex to simple: (i) through-composed melismatic; (ii) through-composed simple; (iii) Gregorian psalm tone; (iv) English psalm tone. Cantors or choirs that are ready to tackle it can choose a more melismatic setting, while beginners could easily render the psalm tone; or the choice can be made depending on the length of the liturgical action or other factors. Verses are given for all the antiphons, as well. Other collections tend to presume either absolute beginners or advanced scholas, but Fr. Weber has arranged his book in a way that suits every possible situation, so that it’s easy to “shift gears.”

I can speak from experience about the value of this Proper. On Sundays at Wyoming Catholic College, the chaplaincy offers two Masses: an EF High Mass in the morning, and an OF English Sung Mass in the evening. Music for both Masses is provided by the Choir (different members of the choir at each service). For the evening Mass over the past year, we’ve been singing from a proof copy of Fr. Weber’s Proper, and it has been PERFECT for the liturgy. The combination of well-crafted Gregorian-inspired melodies and approved liturgical texts, usually drawn from Scripture, yields an unambiguously liturgical chant that invests the entrance procession and incensation, the offertory, and the communion procession with due dignity, formality, peacefulness, and a transcendent focus — just as all good sacred music should do. In this sense, The Proper of the Mass is by far the closest thing I’ve ever seen to the Graduale Romanum, from which our schola chants at daily Masses. Going back and forth between these two books, one in English and the other in Latin, has been a surprising and welcome experience of a seamless spiritual and liturgical continuity.

Ignatius Press has done an immense service to sacred music by producing this handsome and compact Gradual for the Ordinary Form of the Mass. If this resource is widely adopted and utilized to the full, it will be a watershed moment in the history of the resacralizing of the Novus Ordo, a key date along the timeline of the hermeneutic of continuity.

A reprint of don Miguel's "Prayers" book.

If you already have "Prayers: a Communion with our Creator" you should know that the text of this book is identical. However, the former edition is in a smaller size and format. I like this new edition because, aesthetically, it matches the attractive binding of Ruiz's other books. So, if such things are important to you, go ahead and pop for this new edition. On the other hand, if you are new to the text, you should know it is not his best work; the meditations and prayers are reprises of themes that run through his books. I had much different expectations for the book than what it turned out to be. I suggest you check it out at the library before buying; you may like it more than I did.

Don Miguel Ruiz, 21st century prophet...

I am a 62 year old recovering alcoholic. When I first got sober, (3 yrs ago), I got "The Four Agreements" and it transformed my life from one of lonely misery, to one of self love and happiness. The Circle of Fire is a great tool in my "one day at time" program of sobriety. Ruiz's teachings helped me far more than the Big Book in enjoying life being sober...
