Somewhere along the way those who decide such things decided that memorizing poems was not really important to education. Of course, it wasn't really. However, it was a pleasure, and generations of young people are growing up today without knowing it, which is a shame. Hollander (American Poetry, LJ 9/1/93) has selected 100 poems by poets?including lyrics and narratives, meditations and counsels?ranging from Blake and Hughes, Bishop and Thomas, to Yeats and Hayden . These are classics that lend themselves to memory, being short; often in form, or at least metrical; always rhythmic; and delightful. Most readers will find old favorites and new gems here. A Worthy Excercise With A Better Selection Of Poetry!

Although I never considered memorizing anything to be fun or profitable in lower school, the idea of memorizing wonderful poetry appeals today. Intrigued by the title, I picked up a copy of "Committed to Memory: 100 Best Poems to Memorize." Although the idea is a worthy one, the poetry selection disappoints. I am sure that poet, and editor, John Hollander put considerable thought into which poems to include in this book. I just do not care for many of his choices.
I did find various old, (and dear), favorites that shine, and inspire, in an anthology such as this: William Butler Yeats "The Song of the Wandering Angus," E.A. Robinson's "Richard Cory," Percy Bysshe Shelly's "Ozymandias," Richard Lovelace's "To Althea, From Prison," Stevie Smith's "Not Waving But Drowning," Oliver Wendell Holmes "The Chambered Nautilus," and Elizabeth Bishop's extraordinary "Sonnet."
I would never think of committing to memory many of the editor's other selections. They're either too long, too difficult to memorize, or just plain not to my taste. With all of Emily Dickinson's magnificent poetry, why "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass?" And why Robert Frost's "A Mending Wall," which is a wonderful poem, but not the best for memorization purposes? Why "The Owl and the Pussycat" or "The Song of the Mad Prince?" There are, of course, selections from Shakespeare, and even The Old Testament, included. In general, there are too many better poetry anthologies around, to give more than a glance to this one - a disappointing 3 Stars.

ambitious subtitle, but certainly a nice collection

Several years ago, upon learning that a certain young woman enjoyed the poetry of Robert Frost, I began to memorize some of Frost's poetry. While this effort to impress her did not produce the desired outcome, it did introduce me to the pleasurable experience of memorizing poetry. I found that the act of committing a poem to memory brought out many of the poem's subtleties that I missed on previous readings. It's been quite a while since I've seen the lady who inspired my efforts at memorizing poetry, but I still enjoy coming to a closer understanding of a poem through memorization.
It's hard for any poetry fan to take someone else's list of the "100 best" without balking at some of the choices, and I certainly had some question concerning many of the poems included in the anthology. On the whole, however, I enjoyed the collection, and found some new insight into some old poems.

Why would you want to memorize *these* poems?

Many of these poems are just simply not lyrical, rhythmical, nor visual. Memorizing many of these poems will be like eating sawdust.
When we think of great poems to memorize, (there are great poems, and a subset that are worth memorizing.) We think of poems like Blake's "The Tyger". Who can forget the beautifully put together poem of Coleridge's "Kubla Khan"? What about Thomas' "Do not go Gentle into that Good Night"?
To be sure, these poems have been included in this book, but where is John Donne's "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning"? Frost' "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"?
When I think of poems I would like to memorize, I search for those poems that have something to say about human condition. That is mostly a given for great poetry. But to memorize them, I look for poems that are musical -both lyrical and rhythmical, and having good imagery.
So to my excitement, I thought this book would be a good collection of such poems. I was sadly disappointed. There maybe 10 poems in here that are worth committing to memory. The others are just great to read.
To add to more of my frustration, there is no author index at the end of the book.
If you want a much better collection of poems, with a much higher percentage worth remembering, I strongly suggest Laurence Perrine's Sound and Sense.

Grade 3-8-Fans of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Scholastic, 1998) won't be disappointed when they rejoin Harry, now on break after finishing his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Reluctantly spending the summer with the Dursleys, his mean relatives who fear and detest magic, Harry is soon whisked away by his friends Ron, Fred, and George Weasley, who appear at his window in a flying Ford Anglia to take him away to enjoy the rest of the holidays with their very wizardly family. Things don't go as well, though, when the school term begins. Someone, or something, is (literally) petrifying Hogwarts' residents one by one and leaving threatening messages referring to a Chamber of Secrets and an heir of Slytherin. Somehow, Harry is often around when the attacks happen and he is soon suspected of being the perpetrator. The climax has Harry looking very much like Indiana Jones, battling a giant serpent in the depths of the awesome and terrible Chamber of Secrets. Along with most of the teachers and students introduced in the previous book, Draco Malfoy has returned for his second year and is more despicable than ever. The novel is marked throughout by the same sly and sophisticated humor found in the first book, along with inventive, new, matter-of-fact uses of magic that will once again have readers longing to emulate Harry and his wizard friends.

A really cool book

I think the Harry Potter books are really fascinating. They are full of suspense and irony. I wouldn't have read this book because I thought it was for younger kids ( I'm 13)but my friend was reading it so I gave it a try. I didn't put the book down until I finished it. It was that good! I don't want to be rude either but it really does not promote witchcraft. The whole time I read it, using black magic never crossed my mind. I know parents can be overprotective about that stuff but what about JRR Tolkien's Hobbit series and Disney movies with witches and wizards in them. SLeeping Beauty and Snow White and the 7 dwarves show this. Most stories or movies have a villian that is either a sorcerer or a witch. I thought this book was really awesome and even if you are above the age of the Reading Level read it anyway! I love Harry Potter: he is really responsible and smart. He is a good example. His friends are really funny and so are all the other characters. This is really good literature. Thank you so much Ms. Rowling for writing these books.

Mesmerizing

I'm a senior citizen who loves Harry Potter. I have read the first 3 books and will purchase "The Goblet of Fire" on books on tape.
I won't go into the plot. Suffice it to say it follows the book. The acting was wonderful by our 3 main stars. There is not enough of Alan Rickman, a truly wonderful actor. Kenneth Branagh was so-so and I don't know the man who played Lucious Malfoy but he was perfect. I hated him in "The Patriot" and hated him even more here. Richard Harris will be sorely missed. What a fine performance for his last film.
I never realized that the film was 2 3/4 hours. The time flew. The special effects are outstanding.
I liked the further character development. You see what a wonderful and loving family Ron Weesley comes from. You find out why Hagrid is the way he is. You also get to realzie why Draco Malfoy is the way he is when you get to see the father.
There was so much to see. So much to enjoy.
For the first movie, I saw the movie first and then read the book. For this story, I read the book first and then saw the movie. Either way, I was thrilled with both movies.
I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward the the third movie.
If you haven't had the opportunity to see "The Chamber of Secrets", please go and see it. It's a treat for the eyes, mind and soul.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry, a twelve year old boy is continuing another fascinating year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. This second book in the J.K. Rowling series is a must read! Not only do the main characters Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger set out to solve a new problem but, they realize that somebody has opened the Chamber of Secrets. Through trial and error our heroes search for clues to save one of their friends. Again Harry must put his life in danger to save others who are important to him. J.K. Rowling has introduced us to some new characters in book two. We meet a magical elf, Dobby, a new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart and finally Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister who joins the famous trio. I liked this book because it was a true page turner. As the reader you can search for possible clues along with Harry, Ron and Hermione. I would recommend this book to anyone over seven years old. J.K. Rowling did an excellent job on this book because it's exciting and full of adventure. I have learned from this book that life is full of tough challenges and problems. No matter how hard it is you have to be brave and trust in yourself to do the right thing.

An Excellent Overview Of Human Factors, Error Reduction, And Organizational Culture In The Chemical Processing Industry

The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) has produced numerous excellent books for the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI), and this is one of the best of the bunch. I have worked as a Production Manager in a chemical manufacturing facility, have spent much of my life researching and teaching in aviation safety programs, and believe that not only do the majority of case studies, concepts, and conclusions drawn in this book apply to the CPI, but in many other technically oriented tightly-coupled industries as well.

The book commences with an excellent brief glossary and acronym list (pp. xvii-xxi). Most of the terms were familiar, but one that was new to me was "encystment", which is a characteristic of a human under stress, whereby the individual focuses on minor problems or details, while ignoring more important issues. This is similar to "target fixation" in military aviation, but perfectly encompasses a characteristic that has been a problem throughout technological systems, and has caused major accidents in the CPI, aviation, and elsewhere. In this discussion of human error, I took particular delight in a typo on p. 5, which introduced the topic: "Human rror [sic] is probably the major contributor to loss of life, injury to personnel and property damage in the CPI." While unintentional, this minor detail demonstrates that even in an extremely carefully prepared document, mistakes happen.

The book uses numerous excellent case studies throughout to illustrate principles, and spotlights organizational factors (p. 22ff) that are critical to safety, particularly emphasizing the importance of having a blame-free culture which encourages the flow of information, and an explicit policy that safety considerations are always primary. Chapter two "Understanding Human Performance and Error" is one of the strongest, and I especially found the discussion (p. 40ff) of types of errors and engineering approaches to them to be valuable; the table (p. 45) comparing the various perspectives on human error is an excellent reference. While discussing the sociotechnical perspective to human error (p. 86), the book boiled down the essence of an accident as succinctly as I have ever seen anywhere: "Studies of major accidents have shown that they almost always arise from a combination of active errors, latent failures and inappropriate culture."

Chapter three, "Factors Affecting Human Performance in the Chemical Industry", is also a gem. The discussion (p.103) of Performance-Influencing Factors (PIFs; a similar concept in the nuclear industry is that of Performance-Shaping Factors, PSFs) is an excellent introduction to factors that lead to error causation. Exploring the PIFs applicable to a job can go a long way toward defining the plans to reduce error. Characteristics of a good training program are detailed later in the chapter (p. 132), as are more intangible qualities of operator characteristics, including personality factors and suitability, risk-taking behavior, Locus of Control, and Risk Homeostasis Theory (RHT). The discussion of these personality traits (p. 135ff) is of great benefit to managers hiring, matching personnel to jobs, and to training managers in tailoring their programs to their employee group. Of particular note is the table on p. 151 detailing individual and cognitive phenomena under stress, which ties all the personality issues (encystment, thematic vagabonding, tunnel vision, stereotype takeover, etc.) together in an easy to use reference.

Chapter four, "Analytical Methods for Predicting and Reducing Human Error", is also useful, and requires slow, deliberate reading. Numerous predictive and reactive methodologies are explored, but one of the most useful discussions begins on p. 187 where Task Analysis (TA) methods are evaluated, and criteria for employing TA methods are listed. Chapter five deals with both qualitative and quantitative predictions of human error in risk assessment, and while packed with information, is not as universally applicable as chapter four. The Technique for Human Error Rate Prediction (THERP, discussed on p. 226ff) was developed for military and nuclear power users, and has wide-ranging applicability both within the CPI and in other industries, notably aerospace. Although I had seen similar methodologies elsewhere, I found THERP to be lucidly explained and easy to understand and employ.

Chapter six, "Data Collection and Incident Analysis Methods", is another excellent resource for the safety professional. I like the Accident Causation Model and diagram presented (p. 258), and agreed with their discussion of the cultural aspects of data collection system design (p. 259), which emphasize a blame-free safety culture, and freedom from fear of reprisals. Their use of the Space Shuttle "Challenger" disaster as an example of the disadvantages of a culture of blame was spot on. This segues into chapter seven, "Case Studies" nicely. The case studies presented here are all well-selected and nicely explained. I particularly commend the discussion of the Piper Alpha disaster (pp. 292-306), and recommend interested parties to read the unabridged findings of the Cullen commission in the two volume report (available from HMSO in the UK). I was especially enthusiastic about the STEP diagram of the hydrocarbon leak on pp. 300-303. While less newsworthy than Piper Alpha, the case study about Human Factors in resin processing, was also packed with excellent insight. I especially appreciated the discussion of SOP and checklist design on pp. 320-325. This closely paralleled my knowledge from aviation, and again serves to demonstrate the applicability of this work across multiple technically-oriented industries.

"Guidelines for Preventing Human Error in Process Safety" is a fascinating, detailed, and immensely useful book for safety professionals both in the CPI and in other industries with tightly-coupled complex processes (e.g. nuclear power, aerospace, etc.). I recommend this book highly and will keep it on my bookshelf within easy reach.

In-Extremis Medical Care

My disclaimer, I am not a doctor or medical professional. My medical training has entailed Combat Life Saver, Special Operations Tactical Combat Casualty Care, Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (EMT-I) and EMT-T (Tactical) (both of which I am not current) and various medical cross-training I have received from Special Forces medics. My experience has included treating combat wounded personnel (all trauma related) and provided third world medical support and assistance in South-west Asia and Africa. So my review and recommendation is from my perspective on this topic.

This book does an excellent job of providing advance skills to layman and professional. I found with my limited medical background the information presented in this book, I could accomplish in-extremis situations. I have read various books on emergency, primitive, survivalist and backcountry medical care and none have compared to this text. Some of the books in my library I am referring to are listed below;

"Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures for Emergencies" by Hugh Coffee
"Where There Is No Doctor" by David Werner
"Where There Is No Dentist" by Murray Dickson
"Wilderness Medicine" by Paul Auerbach
"Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" By USSOCOM
"Emergency War Surgery" By NATO
"Emergency War Surgery" By Walter Reed Medical Center (diffrent from NATO version above)

All the above titles are excellent but, again I do believe they do not stand up to this title. If I was to pick one book above to use in conjunction with this book for my operational use, it would be Werner's book "Where There is No Doctor" just because this book has proved indispensable to me overseas in non-trauma related situations.

Overall I highly recommend this mammoth book on improvised, down-and-out medical care. I am sure this book will find its way to shelf of Special Forces medics, Survivalist, "bush" doctors and medical professionals as well as be required reading for all the fore mentioned.

Must Reading for E.R. Doctors

I am a retired pathologist, but before going into pathology I did ten years of emergency medicine. Some of this was at large, well equipped hospitals, but some was "moon-lighting" in small, country hospitals, where one may often have to improvise. I think that Dr. Iserson's book should be stocked in all emergency rooms, and is a must read for any doctor who practices emergency medicine. I found it fascinating reading, even though I no longer practice.

As a somewhat experienced paramedic,I am pretty familiar with improvising using what is available to me.This book takes this concept to another level in a manner that is very much like the "Where There Is No ......"series.It leaves me wanting in a few areas,but I feel it is an excellent overview.Certainly a must read for anyone interested in austere medicine!

Excellent Companion

We had multiple rotations while in school. A lot of the time there was little to know warning what all went on in each modality. "Oh my goodness! I'm so nervous. What do they even DO in the Cath Lab????" Comments like that will be eased with this book. There are short concise overviews of things that go on in special modalities. Very helpful.
