Only get this book if you need it for detailed quiz
If not waste of your money. In my actual class we barely used this book so all I needed was the ADDIE model
and other websites have this information everywhere with more details...so yea it's a pass!

This is an excellent resource for people who converse in public places about Biblical issues. The last two chapters are the best. The others seem to me more wordy than is necessary to make a helpful point. So read the last two chapters first!

Misleading Title

This book contains thoughtful, well-stated, fully expressed apologetics. However, its catchy title and trendy cover is misleading; it implies that the book is a reader-friendly guide to answering tough universal questions about God. In this regard, Copan's book really misses the mark. It is written more for the academic rather than your average Christian caffeine addict, like myself. So, if you could use some help giving tangible, biblical responses to questions like "If God is good, then why is there so much suffering?" then I recommend Randy Newman's book Questioning Evangelism. After you read it, bring a seeking friend to the nearest Starbucks, and start a "God" conversation over a cup o' Joe.

Deborah L. Lowther received her Ph.D. from Arizona State.  She is a professor of Instructional Design and Technology and Department Chair of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership at the University of Memphis. Her work includes nationally recognized research initiatives and multiple publications focused on the impact of technology on learning.

 

Clif Mims is an Associate Professor of Instructional Design and Technology. His emphasis is on effective integration of technology with teaching and learning. He has served as the director of the Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence in Memphis and is Project Zero fellow at Harvard University.

 

Jim Russell is an emeritus faculty at Purdue University. His area of interest lies with the integration of technology into teaching and learning. He has worked closely with the development of the ASSURE model used in the textbook.

This book did a great job of simply and effectively portraying the information at hand

I purchased this book for a class I had to take in the fall, I received the grade I wanted and I largely attribute that to the purchase of this book.
•The book does an effective job of showing how technology and media enhance ones ability to both learn and teach, doing so in a specific and realistic manner.
•The book in question is written from the viewpoint of a teacher, the book does a great job on how one should integrate technology and media in the classroom, both to you and the students benefit.
•The text includes and provides the following to help you achieve the ideal teaching and learning experience:
*The ASSURE Model
*Several helpful Pedagogical aids
*A Strong focus on the most up to date expectations and innovations
*Pearson eText with videos and links to more information
Before concluding I should not that this book IS the loose leaf version, meaning you will need to put this in a binder.
•With all that being said, I had no prior knowledge of the subject at hand (took class as an elective) and this book did a great job of helping me better understanding a foreign concept. Like I said I received the grade I wanted and I feel as if this book certainly had something to do with that.

He emphasizes programming's exploratory potential -- its facility to create new kinds of artworks and to probe data for new ideas.

The book is designed to be read alongside the computer, allowing readers to program while making their way through the chapters. It offers practical exercises in writing and modifying code, beginning on a small scale and increasing in substance. In some cases, a specification is given for a program, but the core activities are a series of "free projects," intentionally underspecified exercises that leave room for readers to determine their own direction and write different sorts of programs. Throughout the book, Montfort also considers how computation and programming are culturally situated -- how programming relates to the methods and questions of the arts and humanities. The book uses Python and Processing, both of which are free software, as the primary programming languages.

Some good parts, but feels unfinished overall.

I bought this on the strength of the review by Casey Reas, co-creator of Processing, in which he said that he "learned things continuously" throughout this book. Like Reas, I have been coding as an artist for many years, and based on Reas's review, I expected I would learn a lot more from this book. However, the level is very elementary, and nothing the book teaches you (text processing, data visualization, animation, etc.) is developed to any significant level of depth. As this book is an introductory book on programming, for the arts and humanities, I half-expected this to be the case. However, Reas's review also noted that this book is also an exploration of "computation as culture", so I thought that even if it didn't teach me anything new as a programmer, it would offer some sort of analysis of how coding is situated within culture, how coding is ideological, and reinforces particular dominant ways of seeing the world, and relating to it. It doesn't really carry out any such analysis or critique, however, but functions more as a sort of cheerleader for coding skills - how they can help us all to improve our cognition and give us better tools to analyze and investigate the world. Montfort believes that better coding literacy is empowering, which may be true, but he doesn't offer any kind of critique of how the culture of coding is infiltrating itself into all kinds of different fields, and what effect this is having on the way we see the world and relate to people and things.. As a Professor of Digital Media, Montfort is well-placed to offer this sort of critique, and it would have been most welcome, and a point of difference between this and other "learn to code" books. It was disappointing that it didn't deliver this.

It's hard for me to say how good this book is as an introduction to programming for someone who has never written a line of code, as I am not that person. In some areas it seems to go at a very suitable pace, walking the novice programmer through new concepts in a careful and skilful way. In (many) other areas it seems to gloss over complex and difficult concepts in an alarmingly perfunctory way (e.g. the section on objects and classes). In other sections it often simply suggests that the novice coder go and read the Python or Processing documentation to figure out how to, say, work with probability functions, or extend their Processing drawing skills. This is at odds with the generally slow/careful approach of the book, and I can imagine novice coders finding themselves in deep water very quickly as they try to jump into these more complex areas on their own. I have taught courses on creative coding myself, and I know just how carefully new concepts have to be introduced and reinforced so that students don't become lost. In places, it felt like Montfort wanted to cover some of these concepts, but ran out of time or space, and simply advised the reader to "go and teach yourself", which does not seem suitable for a book aimed at novices.

The book has a chatty, conversational tone, which, for the most part, works well, but can occasionally become irritating when it becomes bogged down in vague generalities for paragraph after paragraph.

I think this book could be greatly improved in the next edition, with some judicious editing, and fleshing out and extending some of the chapters which are too superficial in their treatment. For example, the chapter on statistics and visualization may as well have been left out, as it covers so little, and this is disappointing as the cover illustration of the book promises so much in this area. There is much here which is good and useful (like the general introduction to working with Python) but also much that feels half-finished, perhaps added at the last minute and never fleshed out, to meet a publishing deadline?

Vargas, a longtime corporate and community consultant, approaches social activism with high ideals, a positive viewpoint and, most helpfully, a practical and gratifying plan of action, based in his personal experience and cultural heritage. The "Familia Approach" treats activism not as a solo enterprise but as "a way of living so as to teach love and activate the positive power of our families and communities." Vargas unpacks the Mexican idea of familia and finds enfolded within its notion of the extended family-"everyone you care for and who cares for you"-the American passion for social activism. Each chapter expands on this idea, including reflection questions and bullet-point "practices," with much insight into Vargas's own family and Latino culture in general (both modern and ancient). Though not religious, Vargas is "spiritual," and does consider prayer and indigenous religious practices (like unity circles) important and powerful. Equally important, however, is real human understanding, for which he introduces the surprisingly complex concept of conocimento-conversation meant to deepen participants' knowledge of each other. Vargas's text, full of new agisms like "transformation," "energy" and "synergy," will strike some readers as redundant, but those ready to share in Vargas's passion will find much to learn.

A must read for creating a heathly and engaged family

Have you ever struggled to find a way to make family gatherings meaningful, nurturing and inspiring? Read this book and you will struggle no longer!!!

Family Activism is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read that provides strategies, tool and proven methodolgies for creating healthy and engaged families. The power of the talking stick is one wonderful tool for creating powerful and authentic conversations for birthday celebrations, weddings, baptisms, graduations and other venues where you bring family members togethers in a meaningful and inspiring way.

I also enjoyed learning more about how the process for creating great families can be used in the corporate and public sectors. I was inspired to learn how Dr. Vargas has taken these tools to many corporate environments and has introduced a mechanism to help leaders engage their teams in powerful ways. Dr. Vargas also shared how the tools of family activism can generate authentic, honest and real sharing which leads to greater familiarity, trust, unity and eventually greater results.

I believe this is a must read for anyone interested in investing in a nurturing family, a great community and engaging great teams. What a treasure and again a must read if we are to create a better world, beginning with family and friends!

As an activist, my passion is to improve the quality of life for our communities and strengthen our diverse democracy. This requires a lifetime of work and one needs a strong support structure to face new challenges each day. This book's premise is that positive social change also begins with one's family and close relationships. Creating a healthy family circle enriches ourselves and further propels us to live out our purpose. The author provides simple tools and perspectives that if implemented, can create safe family dialogues that validate our different opinions and honor each other. I can see myself using some of these tools, such as establishing a family council with my mom, uncle and grandfather. I will also buy my good friend, who is a new dad in Oakland, a copy for his new family.

Vargas reminds us that the personal IS in fact political and that social and global transformation begins with the transformation of our interpersonal relationships, as family, community, and peers.

This book is filled with rich and compelling examples from from the authors own life as well as insightful reflections.
