complete waste of money. the cdrom required an access code which was not provided. when inquired about, I was directed to the manufacturer.

I could not open it on one computer. On another computer only a few of the programs worked. It was a great disappointment to me.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this

Product arrived promptly, and even had a code.

But all it did was load an image of the text cover and attempt to dowmload spyware onto my system. Thank goodness my antivirus caught it.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this. But at the price, I thought it worth a shot, as I think PH produces excellent science materials. Would like to chance buying a "new" copy, but now don't even trust those, as shrink-wrap is so readily accessible :-(

So now it's off to open a Castle Learning account and to search YT for chem videos. Aaah, the life of a student (or a student's mom) is never easy.... :-(

ETA: Must acknowledge that the booksellers from which I made the purchase are now trying to locate a functional set for me... Fingers crossed. Impressed by their efforts to help!!

Archaeological sites also contain evidence for many intriguing mortuary treatments, including decapitated burials and the fragmentation, circulation, curation, and reburial of human and animal remains and material culture.

Drawing on recent excavations and earlier archive and published fieldwork, Croucher provides an overview and introduction to the period, presenting new interpretations of the archaeological evidence and in-depth analyses of case studies. The book explores themes such as ancestors, human-animal relationships, food, consumption and cannibalism, personhood, and gender.

Offering a unique insight into changing attitudes towards the human body - both in life and during death - this book reveals the identities and experiences of the people of the Neolithic Near East through their interactions with their dead, with animals, and their new material worlds.

Before purchasing this book, I read several of the posted reviews, noting that some considered the text incomplete for not giving sufficiently concrete examples and others, for its writing style. Having read scores of similar texts, I felt I could wade through it for the rare gem or two it might produce.

I couldn't and it didn't. The book is simply very poorly written. Taylor belabors the tired explain-what-you're-going-to-say, say-it, explain-what-you've-said formula, constantly bringing up topics only to state that she will discuss them in a subsequent chapter and refering to what she discussed in previous chapters.

Simultaneously, Taylor's knowledge outside psychology, i.e. current events and global politics, is limited to the msm version (a form of brainwashing in itself), so her "examples" can be based on weak or faulty "evidence". ("Were the 19 terrorists brainwashed"? Ask them; several are still alive.)

She uses surprisingly few citations for a work of this kind, but quotes frequently from the bible (which many might term another form of brainwashing rather than a reliable historical text.) Her discussions of brain function do not lead to the anticipated chart, table, list or other synthesized guide one might expect from such a text. And, as other reviewers have stated, she claims that little experimental evidence is available due to the ethical question of conducting it. This is macabrely humorous given the plethora of internet and documentary information now available. Nowhere does she mention Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron (MKUltra), having evidently never heard of governments' experimentation in mind control. Throughout, she seems preoccupied with refining a definition of brainwashing rather than increasing awareness of the processes and techniques whereby mind control is achieved.

In fairness, the publication date is 2004. Taylor might well write the book differently now.

Just as a side note, while it might be inconsequential in a better text, the type size Oxford University Press chose for the paperback is quite small (9 pt). Quotes are even smaller. Combined with poor writing, the result is a headache.

I highly recommend Dr. Robert Hare's work on psychopathy and the numerous articles available online regarding brainwashing and mind control available, so long as net neutrality lasts, on the internet.

An excellent description of the powers and methods of persuasion and suggestions to avoid them

I was not looking for a neurology textbook and, in fact, I skimmed that section. I wanted to know in plain language how I and others have been persuaded, cajoled, manipulated and surreptitiously prodded into accepting ideas we knew deep down were not beneficial or logical, products we should never have bought, and people and organizations we should never have gone near, much less supported and spent time with. Why was I persuaded to marry someone who I now think was a thieving, manipulating psychopath? Why did I almost fill an attic full of widgets because of overwhelmingly attractive sales techniques? What radio program does my friend listen to daily and why has she closed her mind to every report of new scientific discoveries? Did I really believe that recruiter who said I had the ability to be an outstanding salesperson when I was the only person I've ever known who was fired by Avon for zero sales?

This book is excellent for pointing out techniques to recognize and evade persuasion. It encourages us to think before we act, to keep an open mind but not so open that we eagerly accept any concepts that we are told are great ideas. Politicians, salesmen, and charities clamor for our funds, and proselytizers offer us pie in the sky as they reach for our wallets. I heartily recommend this book for a fascinating read and some excellent advice to protect our assets and our faith in our own logical reasoning. I do not have sufficient scientific knowledge to judge the neurological sections of this book but am happy to give it four stars for its helpful information and recommend it for a job well done with a subject that affects all of us.

Making sense of the “accreted concoction of ideas we call the self”

Kathleen Taylor is one of my favorite authors. She has a rich, irreverent writing style — bordering on the cheeky — matched with an incredible depth of knowledge in neuroscience and human behavior. More importantly, at least to me, she tends to focus those two things onto the darkest alleys of human existence — why people do bad things.

My introduction to her was through reading Cruelty: Human Evil and the Human Brain, a terrific book about the neurological sources of cruelty as shaped by evolutionary pressures, and brain function and chemistry. Brainwashing was written two years earlier and is structured in much the same way: using a negative concept — in this case, the fear, processes and outcomes of brainwashing — to explore the neuroscience of how we think and why we respond in often predictable, similar ways to the external world. It’s a rewarding journey through the architecture and function of the brain and how people have tried — with varying levels of success — to brainwash others into changing or suppressing core beliefs.

Many of the examples come from politics (the Red Army, our CIA), religion (Christianity, Branch Davidians, the People’s Temple), cults (the Manson family) and culture (academia, the family unit, advertising and the news media).

Some of the standout a-ha moments include the concept of emotions as a contagion, domestic abuse as an especially effective, and heinous, form of brainwashing and the “thought terminating clichés” of ethereal concepts that hide lack of meaning or complexity (especially intriguing given the jargon-heavy corporate world I work in).

Had I read this book before Cruelty, it would have gotten 5 stars, but it suffers just a bit by comparison — mostly due to the “softer” final section that focuses on ways to prevent brainwashing and the effects of undue influence. The moralizing felt flat compared to the harder revelations of why we are who we are and how easily we succumb to “influence technicians.” It seems that section could have been distilled down into two simple concepts: we should be more accepting of others and we should reinforce the value of critical thinking.

It’s not a book for those who consider themselves, their community, their religion or their country exceptional in any way or who are unsettled by confronting the “scary fragility of that accreted concoction of ideas we call the self.”

Perhaps I’ve been brainwashed myself, but I am compelled to buy her newer book The Brain Supremacy.

As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

An eye-opening book.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

Thinking about thinking is outstanding

Thinking about thinking chapter makes it worthwhile even if I get nothing else from the book.
The first 3 chapters get you up to speed on mindfulness with description, scientific studies, and simple exercises.

Then comes thinking about thinking chapter 4. Outstanding! It has helpful exercises and practices that will put you in control of your thinking. I've read 2 of the 3 Steenbarger books and Trading in the Zone book. I'm lukewarm about the Steenbarger books and love Trading in the Zone. I've also bought some material from Menaker and others. TraderMind by Steve Ward is the best resource on trading psychology with real world exercises, questions, practice. It gets you to the mental level you need to be to successfully trade. Chapter 4 on Thinking about Thinking is the eye-opening game changer. It teaches you to observe your thinking as mental events. Chapter 5 and 6 are about emotions and urges. I practice those exercises together because the urges go with the emotions.

You can't expect instant success just by reading the book. You have to put in the time to do the practice work. I haven't finished the book yet but already see a significant difference in my approach and wanted to write a review. As I said, just one chapter makes the book worthwhile to buy. I'll update after I finish the book and its 8 weeks of practice exercises. You are changing how your mind works so it is not a process that can be rushed.

Highly recommend. And ridiculously low-priced for what you get.

Update after finishing the book and the 8 weeks of exercises:
The real jewel of the book is chap. 8 on Habits, Behavior, Action. I highlighted entire paragraphs in this chapter. It didn't have many exercises but its questions helps you align your trading with your values. Chapter 9 Turning Towards Difficulty has the best exercises. Its 3 minute breathing space practice really opened up my eyes to what was going on internally with me while trading. Its practice for Exploring Difficulty teaches you to stop avoiding discomfort and to embrace it while taking effective action. The last chapter does not disappoint either. It suggests 10 ways you can make mind fitness part of your regular trading day (and life).

I have noticed great progress while going through the 8 weeks of exercises and the chapters of the book. I still had some big losses in the first 5 weeks. But in the last 3 weeks I've had only one loss day and it was small. More importantly, I've had a few days when I finally knew what it was like to trade without any type of psychological interference. In other words, my read of the market was crystal clear and unclouded by distracting thoughts and emotions. As I continue my mind fitness program (customized for me using the suggestions in Chapter 10), I expect this to become the norm.

Must read for traders having problemns

Excellent I learnt a lot by reading this book especially about trading with correct mind. I think every aspect of what goes through your mind while trading is covered in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone trading if they are having problems I will definitely be putting the effort in to use everything I have learnt.

Taking trading psychology to the next level

This was a very good introduction to mindfulness and trading. If you know nothing, or very little about meditation and mindfulness and want to improve your trading performance, then this is a very good starting point. As the arms race that is HFT continues, the only edge left for many traders is what occurs inside their head.

This book is different from many classic psychology texts available, such as those by Brett Steenbarger and I think it represents the "next wave" in trading psychology. If you want to achieve the highest possible performance in your trading (or indeed in any part of your life) , then mindfulness is the way to go.

I only gave it 4 stars, because for any practitioner of meditation or mindfulness, the techniques explained are pretty basic. But for anyone who wants to explore this further, in the context of trading, then I would highly recommend this book.

A fun read

This is the third book in this series. It is also one of my more favorite ones in the series. It starts where the second book ends. With Allison and Bart trying to recover from, and start a new honeymoon. Bart sees a known terrorist and assassin on the news and immediately makes plans to go to San Francisco to track him down. Allison is not about to let him take off without her, so she decides she will go with him. With her usual impetuous nature she is quickly thrown into danger as she tries to help those around her, help Bart find this assassin before he kills her family, stop a diamond heist, and spend some time with her new husband. It can be pretty cheesy. And it is a fairly predictable read. But it is great for a light, quick, fun read when trying to relax or escape for a while.

More than boxes

Full disclosure - I know the author. And he's an outstanding woodworker.

To the book. Strother brings a deep understanding of tools, materials, and methods to this book. He walks the reader through the building of a variety of boxes using readily available hand tools and a minimum of expensive stationary power tools. That's good stuff, but if that were all the book did, I'd be yawning instead of writing this review.

What sets this book apart is how Strother explains why he does things. This is crucial information, particularly for beginning woodworkers who wish to expand what they learn here into other projects. For example, while other books might have you saw and joint the stock for box sides, then get right to work cutting dovetails, Strother suggests you set the newly milled pieces aside over night to allow whatever internal stresses whose balance the milling changed to work their warps. Then in the morning, check the stock and re-mill as needed. As an experienced woodworker myself, I can't express how much I wish I had known that early on. That's the sort of knowledge that minimizes the frustration of learning a skill.

Each project not only creates a beautiful box, it develops a more skilled woodworker. I have too much respect for the craft to suggest anyone could go from beginner to master with one book. That takes a lifetime. But this little box book is an excellent starting point - in fact, one of the best I've seen.

Extremely thorough "how to" on making these boxes.

This is an excellent book for a beginner or low intermediate woodworker starting to make boxes, who is also looking to gain understanding of general woodworking techniques. The text and photos in this book are wonderfully clear telling and showing just how each step is performed. This is done much more exhaustively and at a slower pace than most other box making books, which tend to focus rather exclusively on whatever technique makes each individual project unique or intricate. In "Traditional Box Projects" Mr Purdy makes it is easy for someone to duplicate the project steps without having to fill in any steps that have been left out or glossed over. I can't commend this book highly enough for its clarity of instruction. For someone not already quite familiar with the processes of working with woodworking machines and hand tools, this is a good volume to use as both a primer for those techniques and the application of them toward making boxes specifically.

Although there are only eight projects in the book, with the exception of the first one which is a bandsaw box, they are quite similar in their rectilinear designs without a lot of variation in general format. So the book lacks somewhat in design diversity. However, we need to keep in mind that its purpose is not as a design primer but as a hands-on manual of instruction to guide someone carefully through the project steps with a well-constructed box as the result. In meeting this goal, it is one of the best books I've seen, easily earning a place among the pantheon of top-notch boxmaking books from Doug Stowe, David Freedman, Jeff Greef, James Stack, or "Making Great Boxes" from the staff of Wood Magazine. If you seek design diversity, allow me to recommend "400 Wood Boxes: The Fine Art of Containment & Concealment", the books of Tony Lydgate or Andrew Crawford, or "New Masters of the Wooden Box: Expanding the Boundaries of Box Making" which is somewhat redundant with the 400 Boxes book.

My congratulations to Mr Purdy and the Taunton Press staff for a job very, very well done.

Very good book

I've enjoyed this book very much. I know some of the instructions may not be exactly what some people want - down to the one ten thousandths of an inch, but most things I make are on the principle of trial and error. The book gives me direction I need and for my money, it was well worth it.
