Surprisingly "unputdownable"!

This book is a surprisingly warm and inspirational read, and it really is "unputdownable" (as Bristol's version of Time Out put it). Far from a dry textbook account of pupils' lives after school, it is really a collection of short autobiographies by very interesting, warm, and vibrant people who have lived life to the full, unfettered by the type of insecure baggage that can attach itself to children in more mainstream education. I started reading it just as I was beginning to think that I needed to be more authoritarian with my 3 yr old in order to get him to be adequately 'obedient'. I feel genuinely grateful to have read this book in time to realise that children must at all times be treated with respect - obviously not over-indulged, which isn't what it's about either- but that they should be gently guided and nurtured so that their own personalities can flourish, and always treated with respect in order to generate and receive their reciprocal respect, rather than trying to physically or psychologically beat it into them! This respect is what the pupils in After Summerhill (one from each decade of it's 90 yrs in existence) experienced and their lives and personalities clearly blossomed for them as a result. I recommend it to anyone interested in children, education, human well-being, or just interested in a good read - it's great!

Meets the Purpose

This book did provide interviews with Summerhill alumni from different generations and provide their look back and thoughts on their time at Summerhill, and how the post-Summerhill life treated them. The main interviews were conducted during mid 1990 with the short post-script in 2011. If you are considering any of the progressive/democratic schools for your kid, I recommend reading this book as a part of your research.

Kind of drags

It was good to get some perspective from people who had gone through the school, but a lot of the accounts wandered and dragged. This makes the book kind of monotonous considering that many of these subjects have had fairly interesting lives.

The thing that I probably found most interesting is that many of the former students said that they knew other students felt one way, but they did not, and that they saw different strengths and weaknesses with the system that kind of makes me wonder if some of the concepts used by Summerhill really don't make that much difference.

The biggest thing that the school did well was probably fostering independence and adaptability, but I suspect those things could happen in other ways as well.

Perfect for Vet School

I'm a first year vet student and I absolutely love this coloring book! The drawings are wonderful and very detailed. It's another great way to study for anatomy. I would definitely recommend this to any future vet students.

Great, but seems to focus mainly on the dog

I'm using this book while studying Veterinary medicine, and my Anatomy class focuses mainly on the horse, cow, sheep, pig and dog.

This book is really helpful to remember organs, systems and skeleton parts, and even some extras. It has a lot of good quality pictures and labels. Really does help to start remembering parts, specially if you make your own annotations or draw additional labels.

My biggest issue and the reason why I won't give it 5 stars is because most of the pictures are for the dog. Around 80% of the pictures are only for the dog, and I think many of those could have been used for the other species instead (so far I've noticed some unnecessary eye and brain pictures, which feel almost repeated). The order in quantity of pictures would be:

1.- Dog
2.- Horse
3.- Pig / Cow
4.- Cat (I've only seen two pages on the cat so far).
5.- Exotics (mostly and extra, which is kinda cool anyway).

If you want to purchase this book, I strongly suggest to get a textbook also, that way you can see exactly what part to color, since sometimes it can be confusing. But that does encourage learning at the same time so I think that's a positive aspect about this book.

Another negative aspect of the book is the way it's organized. It would have been better to organize it by species or systems in my opinion. Instead it divides the pictures in body areas and sometimes feels hard to find what you're looking for.

But overall I would recommend the book. The price is great for what it offers, though again, my biggest complain is the lack of diversity in species.

Great aide for learning anatomy and its fun too

I found out about this book through a Veterinary Technician study group. One of the students posted a photo and was so excited about it. I love anatomy but find it quite challenging to remember everything now that I am no longer 15 and have a full time job and a household to care for. I purchased this coloring book - because I love to color - the anatomy part was a bonus. I have found it to be invaluable in helping me learn the name and location of anatomical structures of the animal body. This book has many species not just cats and dogs. Coloring in a section that has a name for you to refer to makes it so much easier to remember. This has become my favorite part of Vet Tech Animal Anatomy. It's also quite affordable and it's not something you will finish in a few weeks - it is extensive.

Procopius, born at Caesarea in Palestine late in the 5th century, became a lawyer. In 527 CE he was made legal adviser and secretary of Belisarius, commander against the Persians, and went with Belisarius again in 533 against the Vandals and in 535 against the Ostrogoths. Sometime after 540 he returned to Constantinople. He may have been that Procopius who was prefect of Constantinople in 562, but the date of his death (after 558) is unknown.

Procopius's History of the Wars in 8 books recounts the Persian Wars of emperors Justinus and Justinian down to 550 (2 books); the Vandalic War and after-events in Africa 532–546 (2 books); the Gothic War against the Ostrogoths in Sicily and Italy 536–552 (3 books); and a sketch of events to 554 (1 book). The whole consists largely of military history, with much information about peoples and places as well, and about special events. He was a diligent, careful, judicious narrator of facts and developments and shows good powers of description. He is just to the empire's enemies and boldly criticises emperor Justinian. Other works by Procopius are the Anecdota or Secret History—vehement attacks on Justinian, Theodora, and others; and The Buildings of Justinian (down to 558 CE) including roads and bridges as well as churches, forts, hospitals, and so on in various parts of the empire.

The Last Classical Historian

Since there are so many of these darn things the review shall be divided into three sections. First, a brief description of the Loeb series of books and their advantages/disadvantages. Second shall be my thoughts on the author himself, his accuracy, as well as his style and the style of his translator. This is of course only my opinion and should be treated as such. The final part shall review what this particular book actually covers.

The Loeb series date back to the turn of the last century. They are designed for people with at least some knowledge of Greek or Latin. They are a sort of compromise between a straight English translation and an annotated copy of the original text. On the left page is printed the text in Greek or Latin depending on the language of the writer and on the right side is the text in English. For somebody who knows even a little Greek or Latin these texts are invaluable. You can try to read the text in the original language knowing that you can correct yourself by looking on the next page or you can read the text in translation and check the translation with the original for more detail. While some of the translations are excellent mostly they are merely serviceable since they are designed more as an aid to translation rather than a translation in themselves. Most of them follow the Greek or Latin very closely. These books are also very small, maybe just over a quarter the size of your average hardcover book. This means that you'll need to buy more than just one book to read a complete work. They are also somewhat pricey considering their size. The Loeb Collection is very large but most of the more famous works can be found in better (and cheaper) translations elsewhere. If you want to read a rarer book or read one in the original language then you can't do better than the Loeb Editions.

There are 7 volumes of Procopius in the Loeb series which include all his known works. Procopius was the last great Classical historian and a personal favorite of mine. His works were written in the middle of the 6th Century during the reign of Justinian when the Empire was once again on the rise. His books are about the wars to reconquer the Western Empire which had fallen in 476. As an author Procopius is highly readable. His works cover a very interesting period and do so with great skill. He is from the Sallustan school of history writing and divides his work into sections based on similar topics instead of following a strictly chronological approach. This makes his books both easier to follow and more entertaining for the reader. While his books are technically focused on the wars they cover much more than that including politics and economic matters. Procopius is also the author of two other very different books. One a very boring panegyric on the building works of Justinian and the other called the 'Anecdota' or 'Secret History' which is basically a collection of every possible slander he could make against Justinian, his wife Theodora, and just about everybody else he'd ever met. As you might gather from those two different books Procopius suffers on accuracy issues. While he doesn't seem to have told direct lies (except in his secret history) his lies of omission are likely to be serious. Unfortunately he is our main source for that era which makes it hard to check him against other sources. Still, even if he fudges facts a little to obscure some points he is unlikely to have completely changed the events described. The translation is quite good.

This volume contains the end of the books detailing the war to reclaim Italy. I don't know why they split the books into bits.

Makes for Pleasurable Reading and Research

It is great to see that Procopius is still being made available to all. This version provides the reader with both the Greek and its English translation. Thus, if you read Greek you have Procopius' own words. If you don't read Greek, you have a completely faithful translation. Procopius was secretary to General Belisarius, chronicling the generals battles and other actions of his life. You are getting history first hand when you read or study Procopius. You are not getting some historian's interpretation of events long past.

About the Author
Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Kathryn Pinna received her M.S. and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught nutrition, food science, and human biology courses in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years and has also worked as an outpatient dietitian, Internet consultant, and freelance writer. Her other publications include the textbooks Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition for Health and Health Care. She is a registered dietitian and member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellie Whitney, Ph.D. grew up in New York City and received her BA and PhD degrees in English and Biology at Harvard and Washington Universities. She taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, wrote newspaper columns on environmental matters for the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which repeatedly reappear as new editions. She spen three decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology, and then cowrote PRICELESS FLORIDA: NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS AND NATIVE SPECIES (Pineapple Press, 2004). Now retired, and more concerned about climate change than any other issue, she volunteers full-time for the nonpartisan national nonprofit Citizens Climate Lobby.

Good text, good content, unacceptable typos

I used the print version of the 8th edition for a class a couple years ago, but I didn't think I'd use it again and sold it. Now I'm taking a clinical nutrition course that uses the same textbook, so I decided to try out the Kindle version and save some money. I understand that there are differences in formatting between a print and Kindle version of a textbook, but the level of typos in this text are awful. It couldn't possibly have been proofread before publishing. Some of the essential formulas for calculating nutritional needs are indecipherable because symbols like = and * have been somehown exchanged for 5's and other numbers. I've even noticed that entire segments are missing from the text. I hope they are only small segments, because I'll be really angry if it comes time to take the exams and they ask questions about information that was omitted from my Kindle textbook. My advice is to wait for publishers to work out the kinks in this, spend a little extra money on the print version, and sell the book back to Amazon when the course is over.

This textbook is actually a really good read. I have been enjoying the way the authors put this book together. What's convenient about it too is that at the end of each chapter, there is a Highlights section that goes into further detail about the subject and applies it to real life.

Extremely overpriced. The book is written matter-of-factly and in a somewhat condescending tone at times. Perhaps it would be better if I had a good professor.

About the Author
A. Scott Moreau (DMiss, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is professor of intercultural studies at Wheaton College Graduate School in Wheaton, Illinois. Gary R. Corwin (MA, Northwestern University), a missiologist serving with SIM International, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gary B. McGee (1945-2008) received his PhD from St. Louis University and taught at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.

Imparting the Heart of Mission into our Hearts

Riding on the popularity of the first edition, this missions primer is a must have for anyone desiring to plunge into the other volumes 2-8. Readers may be wondering why a second edition needs to be published after only ten years. That is because there has been a dramatic rise in "ideas, practices, challenges, and opportunities in mission," with several "insider movements" to be shared. This is supplemented by four additional sets of materials: 1) case study; 2) numerous sidebars; 3) Academic resources for professors and students; 4) Visual resources.

There are tonnes of resources in this book. The key terms help explain and define common terms to guide newbies into the world of missions. Words like "10/40 window," "diaspora," "contextualization," "ecumenical movement," "All Nations," and so on are explained with clarity. Quips are included to give the readers a sense of how missions are being integrated into the mission of the Church. Theology is extensively dealt with from a biblical perspective from both the Old and the New Testament. The word mission is not simply limited to cross-cultural ventures into foreign lands. It includes both local and foreign, inside and outside the Church, both business as well as non-profits, and many more. For the words "All nations" are very inclusive. Many of the sidebars can be used as a discussion starter, even a whole study in itself! I appreciate the one on "Meditating on Discipleship Failure" which is a blunt look at how Jesus' disciples had failed consistently during Jesus' time, and how we can avoid falling into the same potholes. Theology and mission are tightly intertwined and not to be treated as some kind of a specialized option. The mission of the Church and world missions are integral parts of the Missio Dei (All that God does to build the kingdom).

Historically, the authors assert that missions have not ended with the end of the biblical times. Instead, it has grown and expanded. The history of the Church is directly related to the history of missions. In the Premodern Era (AD 30-1500), believers often risk their lives to spread the gospel to faraway lands. From the Pentecost moment, believers were scattered from Jerusalem throughout Rome, toward North Africa, Asia Minor, and other lands. John Mark Terry and J.D. Payne give seven factors that spurred the growth of the church, but also persecution. After the Pax Romana, the decree to make Christianity the official religion in AD 313, the status of Christianity became enshrined in the Roman Empire. We learn about the Era of Discovery and Colonialism (AD 1500-1900) which bring out both the best and worst of doing missions. As the good news gets preached to many lands, missionaries often had a tough time, many being killed for their efforts. There is the rise of mission societies and organizations to address the lack of urgency among mainline churches. The authors include the era 1900-2000 to discuss the 1910 Edinburgh mission conference, rise of Protestant missions and their evangelical counterparts, Pentecostalism, and Vatican II initiatives.

For missionary candidates or those seriously considering mission work, there are three chapters that speak to that need. It provides helpful guidelines on discerning the call. Here, the authors share their testimonies about their own experiences. Another helpful aspect is to look at the misunderstandings of what the missionary call means. What is important is that we are all called to missions, but it is the specific overseas cross-cultural missions that will require a specific discernment to the call. Assuming the candidates are called, the chapter on "Missionary Preparation" covers training, character traits required, spiritual disciplines, ministry skills, pastoral care, professional expertise, and learning to anticipate and adjust to changing circumstances. Another chapter covers the other aspects like choosing a missions agency, short-term mission trips, tent-making, and many more.

With regards to the actual missions, ample space is allocated for both the sent as well as the sender. This is important as mission involves both. The missionary is responsible to serve out there in the field while the sending agency or the Church is responsible to maintain a line of support. The chapter on personal preparation is one of the most important to prepare missionaries for person and family issues. This also includes language learning, teamwork, singleness, and dealing with loneliness. Strategic and ministry issues like understanding what church and mission is, how to channel limited resources to the areas of calling, and money matters. There are instructions on building relationships with target groups and to maintain connections with the sending church or agency.

On the contemporary world missions, we see a lot more new material with regards to constant engagement with pluralistic worldviews, different kinds of communications, relational skills, conflict management, missions trends and paradigm shifts. There is a lot more wisdom with regards to short-term missions and how to ensure that mission teams do not become a burden to the locals or missionaries. More churches are doing their own missionary sending instead of relying on traditional mission agencies. Partnerships are more common. The part on technology is unfortunately too brief. I would have hoped for more in this Google generation.

I am quite pleased about this book. Just combing through the chapters has highlighted to huge amount of work and considerations that needed to be done. Missions is not simply sending a person out. It needs preparation, training, knowledge, experience, and teamwork. Anyone who wants to be a good disciple must encounter and be involved in missions in one way or another. Unconvinced? Try reading this book, and then tell me again.
